Event id #2921 : Tiny Petscii Compo 2020

Hello and welcome!

This is a very challenging online compo!

Rules:

1) Images can't be bigger than 8x8 chars. Images can't be smaller than 2x2 chars

2) Images can only use 2 colors. One for background, one for all the chars.

3) Best works will be added as Stamps to Petscii editor "Petscii Cola":
Petscii Cola 0.5

4) Best works will also be released as C64 graphic collection.

Kool little compo ;)
Some entires so far are truly amazing.
I think a small demo including and showing all of the entries is mandatory. :D

and what a mess that it caused in the front page :D
still, fun compo!

(but for real tho, maybe it's better to slow down a bit on the releases..)

Some people even created accounts in order to participate. Some drawn their first ever PETSCIIs. I think it's a good thing to keep it going.
Also- PETSCII images are small, about 2 kB/each PRG. The server should be fine :)

What did I do wrong that my entry is shown as being outside of the competition?

@Pararaum You need to update your entry and a few fields below the title there is "outside of compo". Change it.

Yeah, I've fixed many entries that were not set as C64 Graphics compo, some were set as C64 sampled music (WTF?), "released by" field empty or set to both the releaser and his group... =)

Would have prefered if you would have held back this compo until ICC is over. Great final entries were hardly recognized among this flood. But I guess you did not expect so many entries being submitted... ;)

It's a miracle, if you consider the fact that "This is a very challenging online compo!" ;-)

Someone pick the right pictures and create a story telling demo from these many entries :)

I'd love to see the competitors create higher resolution prods as well, hm...

Just like Didi I think nobody really thought of that many entries and its even quite hard to vote through all of them. Maybe future alike compos should be limited in number of entries per participant and probably have some rough theme so not just anything ends up on the compo.

Anyhow - interesting to see many different people adding releases nowadays :) - keep it up and PLEASE double check your entries and e.g. set graphics type to PETSCII.

Some screens use the border (D020) in a different colour than the background (D021) and some even in a third colour on screen.

The rules only allow 8x8 characters and two colors as graphical elements.

So a different border from the background would be against the rules, because the border is part of the C64 screen and a visible part of the picture. Therefore these pictures are bigger than just 8x8 characters and it has more than two colors, too.

Just my 2c.

Are we allowed to make PETSCII animations in the compo while if it applies with the 8x8/two colors? Or does it violate the rules? Had a thought of it, and I'm planning on making one sometime before the deadline (hope I can make it though..).

@Brittle As stated in the info if your work is good it might become a Stamp. Animations cannot by Stamps. But you can submit your animation as "outside of compo" piece.

Is it correct to assume that all the entries with a signature at the bottom right are all out-of-compo entries because of not complying to rule number 1?

It will save us a lot of time voting ;-)

TheTom has a signature in their submissions, so I think it's safe to assume that signatures are ok.

Everything outside the picture (8x8 or less) is to be ignored. So borders and signatures should be ignored when voting.

So one could make a 8x8 pic on top and add a "signature" sized 40x17 below it. Clever =)

if you sort the entries by the votes you see who "won". ok, you don't see if your entry ended #125th or #127th but who cares?

I posted the results here:

I'll try to get the places put next to each entry here, on CSDB, but some people locked their entries and there is over 300 of them so it might take a moment!

You know, my dream ever since childhood was to be among the 20 best in a tiny petscii compo. When other kids wanted to be detectives, fire fighters, superheroes, porn store keepers, I would always tell everyone that when I grow up, I'm going to be a tiny petscii artist, one among the 20 best. And now... now I'm placed 22th and basically my life is ruined and I see no other option but to ragequit. Goddammit!

When I grew up, the scene was a place for everyone... Sometimes in life people struggle... it can be family issues, their children, their loved ones, illness, work, creativity or what ever... maybe more and all things at once in one massive wall.

What I have learned from my upbringings are that everyone struggle in life. ... some time shit really hit the fan - big time... for me the c64 scene have always been a safe harbor. Wish it was so, but the mocking is strong here now - and one wrong hour remain... please stay a while - stay forevahhh.

Some (well-deserved) mockery won't bring you down, that doesn't mean anyone seriously defines you because of one fail, so +1 @"stay forevahhh"

PAL, if it helps at all, I had actually and totally forgotten about the origins of this already (ragequitting)... until you reminded me. So, at least I can say that it wasn't targeted at you, altough now that I remember, it obviously seems like it was. Sorry for that, but then again, these things happen, everybody fucks up on occasion and people forget surprisingly fast. I already did. Let's get on with our lives... nothing to see here. But I still was 22th and that sucks ass.

BTT I ended #170 of #330. If this had been a "normal" (full screen) PETSCI competition and I had really put some effort in it, I might have been disappointed. However, I admit I was really uninspired, which has also to do with the nature of the compo: on the one hand the restrictions (hated monochrome even more than 8x8 tiles) and on the other hand the daily shitload of... erhm... shit? entries were also rather demotivating. If you then consider the many amazing entries, I could even pat myself on the back for #170... or consider my "work" (banging my head 64 times on the keyboard) highly upvoted :P Looking 4wd to full screen PETSCII standalone, even ready to launch one again - after X
