trouble with transfering

hi everyone

this might be a dull question but anyway...

i tried to transfer the following demos to 5.25 disks with star commander. although the transfer seems to end normally the disks won't load on real c64. is there a known problem. i suspect the demos could be 40 track disks and sc only copies 35 tracks. the demos are
1- cycle
2- soiled legacy
3- larch

since i couldn't transfer any one of them i stopped :(

my sc settings are xe1541 cable,turbo/warp speeds. and i choose full disk copy option.

any help would be greatly apreciated.
thnx

Hello,
I did transfer Cycle with 35 tracks, but Warp Speed makes troubles with XE1541 cable, at least on my PC and with all the drives I have tested. Turbo Speed, it's nearly as fast (a matter of seconds, as far as I know) and then it worked all for me ever since.
1998, I read somewhere that the Warp works best on 1541-I but not 1541-II. But do not quote me on that! O:-)

Don't forget to use the re-calibrate buttton in the transfer options.

None of these demos uses 40 tracks. You can recognize a 40 track diskimage from its size of 192 KB (instead of the normal 170 KB). To troubleshoot your problem we'd need a tiny bit more information than you gave us:
- version of Starcommander
- cable used
- operating system (plain DOS or Win9x?)

so here is some more detail

i dedicated an old 486 to this job. i have plain dos'ish OS (hdd formatted by win98 startup disk with sys option)
i use 1541 (not 1541-ii)

my sc version is 0.82

cable is xe1541

i will try to format to make sure the disks are okay.

i can transfer mist image(much smaller no of effective blocks) and it works ok

but cycle ccrashes after soundtrack selection (exactly like optimus) soiled legacy doesn't end loading.

Something to try first might be getting the newest beta version of SC, it's 0.83.14 IIRC. See if that helps anything.

Hi all,

I don't think its the pc at all, so direct anyway.
read this line from the xe1541 manual of joe foster

You definitely need 1N5819 or BAT85 for this cable, other Schottky-diodes or the usual 1N4148 diodes don't work with many motherboards.

And as far as i got it.

1541 II = turbo
1571 - warp

so better get a 1571 for maximum speed other you maybe get time out problems.

I hope it helped a little.

Nah, Warp mode works fine here on all my 1541s and 1541-IIs, that shouldn't be a problem.

Exactly like my problem. I tried to write some more yesterday. Cycle with BAM copy, full disk copy, warp mode (Mmm,. haven't tried the turbo mode yet :P). It won't work again. Neither Soiled Legacy. I think the problem might be the drive (plain 1541). I copied Insomnia and it crashes during the intro, while the 'Drive test' option tells me that drive is not suitable, demo might not run well..

Others work fine. I have XE1541 and use SC from pure DOS, perhaps I could also try to transfer from my 486 and surelly download the latest version of SC. At least, with the turbo/warp modes, I can make tests easier now and find out what's the problem..

Also. What is 'Validate'?

Also, when I copy sometimes a D64 to the disk, after that I try to copy a simple PRG file to the disk and I get a disk error/missing/something. I switch off the drive, then switch it on, and then I can copy the file. After that, I can't copy another one except if I do the same. Strange..

Validate: Re-read the just written sector from the disk to see if all bytes were written correctly and if they are readable from the disk. Increases transfer time, but makes it more safe. I have it turned on always.

i made some more debugging.

i transfered cycle and soiled legacy to 1541. then i retransfered the 5.25 disks back to .d64 using same drive and pc. then i try the .d64's on the emulator and they work. i changed the drive and c64 i use and i could run them on the real thing. but soiled legacy fails to run like 1/4 times and thus my new conclusions are...

1- i assume there is no problem on my transfer setup
2- cycle seems to run ok
3- soiled legacy seems to be very tightly coupled to loading times. if the drive is late just a bit it fails maybe...

optimus: i suggest you retransfer the disks back to d64 and try the d64s on the pc and see if something is wrong during transfer or during running.

an even better thing to test would be to binary compare the original .d64 and the retransfered .d64

Sorry, to correct you, but warp mode is a problem, depending on motherboard and drive. what Exile refers to is correct...
Well, SC/XE1541 is depending on many factors, but nice to hear that warp mode works fine for you :)
Well, and I am speaking about a normal 1541 not one with any SpeedDOS, DolphinDOS, JiffyDOS or so.

What kind of c128d do you have ? I use one since 96 or so, and except demos that fucks with the vic extra regs, I found out that every demo works fine for me on it.

Nafcom: Allright, I stand corrected. ;-)
It never caused problems for me, and it's actually the first time I ever heard about it. And I'm using the SC for about, hm, 5 years now (4 or 5 mainboards and most of the time without the parallel speeder floppy).

its a c128d plastic. for some reason its picky with loaders,
and dislikes the loader in feedback/triad , bastard/breeze
all smash designs demos, hcl's loader. and probably quite
a few other :)

None of us is really wrong or right, it just depeends on too many factors. I use SC since 1998.
