You know what would be cool?

A demo with transitions from Oldschool to modern stuff.

I guess the different types of effect are also relevant, and pretty much just as arbitrary to separate into two clusters, or even to sort in "chronological" order.

Yeah, I think that's a pretty close fit, much as the newer effects in that are getting a bit dated by today's standards.
