Unknown Hardware
Hi, my mate maestro sent me some hardware today and looking at it it is a simple plug through connector for the User i/o port, its in a plastic box thats redish wood effect, has the words "dirk klaus schvl" on the top and has a red reset switch mounted on the side that is connected to the 'No.2' the 'A connections', it also has the word "lindy" printed on the board inside the cartridge.
Anyone know anything about it, or translate what it says on it??? |

wasn't it possible to apply software protection to prevent reset via user port. i know other methods can be used to prevent successful freeze/reset via cartridge point to an extent as well. |

RESET is RESET, it doesn't matter, from where it comes. So yes, it was possible to inhibit the RESET via user port also. By just putting a cartridge ROM signature at $8000. But it's no difference, if you reset via cartridge port, user port, serial port, or even do it the clean way shorting the capacitor at the NE556. |

Not exactly true.. On OLD c64, yes - but on newer ones, there's an INTRES and EXTRES signal, and the EXTRES connected to the Serial Port will not trigger an INTRES and vice versa. That's why newer c64s do not reset the 1541 when resetting and why resetting a connected 1541 will reset OLD c64s.
..but would it in theory be possible to somehow keep the RES pin on the CIAs pulled high? ..or even pull it low using software? - I figure some weird 6526 bug/feature would have to be found/utilized for that ;-)

Ah, okay, didn't know that difference in the new C64, as i didn't care that model too much. In fact, i never played along too much with RESET. Connected it in my old 64s to the NE556, and the 128 has it built-in, besides this, my parallel cable has a reset switch :)
I don't think this "hard reset by software" would work, except, there is really a bug in the CIA, but besides all other bugs in the chips built into old commodores, this is quite unlikely. Pulling it low for a longer time won't work at all, as this would also reset the CIA, which then initialized and would release reset immediately. |
