confused about Dolphin Dos
I have one machine that was converted and the 1541 to go with it.. and you get a parallel cable coming out of the drive as well as the usual connector.
Someone offered me a 1541-ii the other day with dolphin dos fitted , but no parallel cable.. so I wondered where the rest of it was, and obviously I said to him yep that's HALF of it, but no parallel cable also?
so the jiffy / dolphin dos's I see advertised on ebay are complete? as well they just show the chip, but no edge connector etc.
thanks for reading, hopefully someone gets what I mean.

Then you need a Dolphin DOS parallel cable, simple as that.
I dont know if its 'straight', but f.ex the SpeedDOS cable has some wires swapped.
So google how the cable must be made.. |

You really should start off by being slightly more precise or you are confused about Dolphin and Jiffy Dos. Whatever it is - Dolphin requires parallel cable for full speed, Jiffy is usually just a chip. (There is a special parallel cable for C64-RamLink-CMD-HD Jiffy combos.)
Therefore Jiffy can for e.g. 1581 or 1541II just be burned to an eprom and plugged into the drive. Dolphin I am not too sure about, but the ROM is EPROMed likewise - the parallel cable is indeed different from the common speed dos parallel cable.
Cheapest off you are with Jiffy (and most compatible) - if you look for parallel speed, go for speed dos.
You really should check google for some differences whenever you are looking for something special. Prologic DOS is nice as well.
Identification help is always the power on drive error channel output (DOS wedge '@') - post that along with questions. :)

parallel cable doesnt really make a lot of sense these days though.... if cant tell already what exactly you want it for, then you probably do not need it at all.
btw C0... speeddos loader is only 6x , its slightly slower than jiffydos :) |

ok.. as well as the normal serial connection that a standard c64 drive has, the 1541 I have also has an additional cable that goes to the user port from the 1541 (left side, normally for modem.. PDS etc)..
the later things I see advertised only have the chips 1 for the drive, 1 for the c64, WITHOUT an additional cable.
although it's dolphin dos, it is basically jiffy dos rebranded by evesham micros.. so I was wondering if there was a newer revision hence the lack of the user port connector.. and did that port being used increase the amount of bandwidth data could use.
hopefully that's more precise / exact. |

if by "exact" you mean "bullshit" - then yes :) jiffydos has zero in common with dolphin dos. and dolphin dos always needed a parallel cable.

Dolphin dos also works without parallel cable, its not so fast then naturally ;) |

Yes Jan , that's exactly the type of setup the cable is BUT with the user port connector on the other end instead of the DB15 or DB9 type.
the manual I got years ago with the 2 chips / parallel cable, mentions Jiffy dos on the cover hence the confusion, although it is sold as dolphin dos and indeed like the AR you have the "@" in front of the commands.
so no NOT BS.. if you don't get what I've said, whats the point..
thanks for the rest of the none snotty answers.

dude, really. the above mentioned cable is the speeddos cable. it can NOT be used with dolphin dos (and not with jiffy dos either ofcourse). and no, jiffy dos wasnt sold as dolphin dos either, or the other way around. what you got might just be a collection of more or less unrelated things.
and you should do what countzero said. reset the drive (or power it off/on), then get the error channel (by typing '@') - and it will tell you whats in the drive. there is no point at all in speculating unless you did that.
btw its well possible that the drive contains a jiffy dos rom, and then someone added the parallel cable to use it with certain copy programs (which do NOT require a special rom in the floppy drive, only the cable is enough).

Full ack to grp - just closing comment:
I was suggesting speed dos since it comes with e.g. early startup interruption (cart toying), built-in monitor, well compatibility and the standard cable.
Ideal solution nowadays would really be just jiffy. I rarely see a good reason to run parallel cable software anymore nowadays. (Except maybe for Burst Nibbler or such - but hardly even worth that hazzle.)
1581, FD2000/4000, CMD HD, RamLink and quite a few more devices support JD while it's a joke to install to a 1581 or 1541-II - the c64 part is just 1 minute more messing.
Other modern hardware such as 1541u and mmc will probably not be easy to solder the cable to when really wanting parallel.
Parallel speeders adding some 8, 16 or 32k ram to the drive can be used to e.g. write vmax copy protections to disks and generally access disks very fast due to track buffering. Don't want to google now nor mix up things but one speeder reads the whole disk at once and accesses ram only then - was available for 1571/c128 as well (ProLogic?)...
You need such things? Or actually can handle them... umpf .. sorry... snoring...
