Downvoting, for what reasons?
Seems I got two inverse mega fans. They gave me a set of 1 point votes.
I was a bit interested in finding out who that was, since I've never heard of them or seen any posts from either of them on CSDb.
The votes in question are registered to Auslaender and abracadabra, which is perfectly ok, if they think I suck...
At first I just clicked the abracadabra link and some pretty empty profile with a picture of a magician showed (refered to a guy call Mira, too!). I thought, hmm, strange.. Maybe someone who'd like to conceal himself or something... Didn't think much of it to be honest.
I wasn't untill another one showed. Auslaender!. Strange handle, but then again, we're strange people most of us.. I wonder who that is!.. No profile, when doing a profile search.. Though I'd search the forum for posts, and .. bang... All my indifferent discussions with Nata showed, only Nata showing as Auslaender!.. Sigh!.. Why?.. For what use?.. I don't get it.. He can vote me all the way to the bottom of the list for all I care, but I'm really disappointed.. I hope someone else hacked his profile or something, because that would mean that I didn't misjudge Nata in the past. |

and maybe disable anonymous godmode too?
Aww, i've always wanted to be an anonymous god... actually, i'd tell every fucker who'd listen so i wouldn't be anonymous anyway. =-) Problem is, i know i'm the wrong person to ask because i'd abuse the powers and add "because i'm a cock" to loads of posts by people i disliked! |

I would with go with that. CSDb reveal the high voters, and hide the low voters. If i were to vote on a release weather it be high or low, i wouldn't have a problem with others seeing the vote that i had cast. |

if votes vould be visible, then you could make fake accounts to downvote |

...which brings us to the point that every (login) account should be linked to a scener profile. |

In that case the mods should remove votes made by individuals that have nothing to do with the c64 community. In order to cast a vote on CSDb it should be required that the individual should have a handle and have had some involvement in a c64 production. I think that should cover it. |

What is really the difference between voting low and a downvote, if we are disregarding intentionality. It would mean nothing more than a bad point recieved...
No doubt anonymous votes seem to be interpreted as a "downvote" if they are low. But equally high votes could be considered "upvoting" or "cheating" even, if the vote is "hidden". However this is often not discussed, at least to my knowledge. Although it has proven that alot of the times an up-vote needs at least a ten to really get something good out of it ;D
So really the problem seem to be that the votes are hidden?
As Oswald points at, there is always the possibility of arrangeing for a new account to get some more points (or less, as in the case of the thread...)
But seriously guys, are you all living on the statistics in here?
Could not a bad vote be considered a sign that a majority among the voters considered the release crap? Hence: reading a low grade as a sign of someone's discontempt no matter the intention was to make the release fall in a hierachy of top points or whether or not the person simply disliked the product?
Never thrust the numbers, as they are easily manipulated. Judge your own work in an honest way and dont let yourself be blinded either by yourself, the friendly words you hear or in the environment you live. Take a good look at yourself and do what you feel like, no matter what. This also goes for crap comments, of course... :D

It's a question of what you call a "good" or "bad" vote too, but the anonymity plays an important part i think. i've given products a 1 vote before now but that was purely because i felt they deserved that vote and there's no point in having a range of 1 to 10 if we can't use the entire range is there? Granted, that opinion is mine, subjective and so on blah blah, but i also stand by whatever i vote by making it public. It's not exactly cowardice if someone doesn't stand by their opinion (and some people have reasons, i know) but it does call into question that opinion or indeed the motivation behind it when the vote is at the extreme ends of the scale.
And Ed, of course nobody complains about upvoting; we all like high scores on our hard work! =-) |
