Best Format to distribute demos etc?
I've recently retrieved my C64 (and 300+ floppies from the loft) and have found a whole load of music, demos etc from 1988 - 1992 that I'm sure people would be interested in.
So, not that I've got my hands on a XM1541 cable and can transfer all this stuff to the PC, what are everyone's preferences for the way to distribute this stuff?
Obviously if it's a multi-part demo, then it's obvious that you just use a .d64 disk image...
But what about small stand alone files... music with players etc? Just distribute the .prg or what?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Quote: I agree with TDJ. Single file stuff is fine in a D64 as well. There are many viewers for D64 files, but I'm not aware of any viewer for T64s...
You serious?
Even I know you simply drag it into VICE and it works. ;) |

Same as TDJ for me, i convert everything in D64 format and then zip it, then it takes up not much more space than prg or t64.
Whole disks would be even better. |

Money problems in the age of 400 GB harddisks. I only have 120 gig, and collect a lot of stuff like music, movies & comics, so I need every gig I can spare. |

Quote: For spreading I agree with the gentlemen above. For my demo collection personally I put every demo on a seperate .d64 file. Unfortunately this takes up quite a lot of diskspace, I'm eagerly awaiting a winvice version that can handle 'zipped' .d64 files :)
What's wrong with gnuzip? That already works perfectly in WinVICE. |

Hmm, didn't know that. Still I'd prefer "normal" zip, as that one's easier to use. |

My two cents would be "normal zip" and in a d64 image. Most of the mags on mags.c64.org are in this format (with exceptions such as .prg files).
Priority #1 is to get the stuff that is not available on the net converted. This seems to be the biggest hurdle for most people.

I'm sure the VICE people had docs on which zip plugig/application could be installed and configured so WinVICE could handle zipped D64s. I did hav it working once until I updated WinVICE a few times and got lazy. |

"normal" is somewhat easier to use when _creating_ the image. gnuzip is easier to use afterwards, because it works right out of the box in VICE. :) Winzip has no problems unzipping them if you wish to do that. gnuzipped images (.gz) are easier to handle in the tools because they contain only one file. This means they can be handled exactly the same way as a regular d64.
Although, I think that a .zip option would be great if it allowed you to put several .d64's into a .zip, and automatically put them into VICE's flip-list. |
