HardSID & USB 2.0
Hi,
I'm looking for something like HardSID, but can be connected with USB 2.0 etc.
In this way I real SID-power could be used even on Laptops.

No, and HardSID wrote it's not planned in the near or far future anyway, because I wrote an email to them and asked.
The HardSID is only available for PCI |

But anyway, this would be cool! |

Well, since PCI ports get more rare on newer motherboards, he will be forced to use any other interface type than PCI, like he had to switch from ISA to PCI in past ;) so that he could sell HardSIDs anymore! |

lol. guys, send an email to hardsid, they collect amount of requests. I requested Windows XP 64 bit drivers, and I am the only one requesting them :(
It would be neat if I was not the only one :) |

I use pc64 cable and "fake hardsid" driver to get real sid sound... it costed me few E instead of 100E :)
(un)fortunately it doesn't work on XP but does on 95,98 and 2000 for sure. I even soldered PC64 directly to userport for Phobos/Samar so he can compose on real thing w/o much effort using goattracker. Too bad it requires to load a driver from tape/disk, when I'll finally finish my EEPROM programmer I'm going to make a cart with that driver or sth like exchanging rom inside commie.
also using vice with real sid is nice as it frees CPU power and there is no latency (which in vice is a minimum of 100ms due to buffers size)
PS. don't use 128 for this as it noises a bit too much.

I doubt it will play NTSC tunes correctly and in my eyes, a lot of good tunes are NTSC tunes |

true. it would need to modify clock circuit (hmm.. maybe switchable) to set it to NTSC value. that's not difficult to do it anyway ;-) . to sum up : there is no need to care about 50/60 hz difference in this case as PC is polling commie with proper frequency, but SID itself must be driven at 1.02MHz for NTSC

PS... my 64th post on CSDB phorum ;P |

I'm digging this thread up since I got a hit here searching for a project I tried a few weeks ago.
This archive allows to use a real C64 connected over USB to your PC. Use a simple 5V serial to USB adapter with FT232* or PL2303 circuit, can be found cheap on eBay and other places. Hook only TxD, RxD and GND according to instructions.
http://dawork.synchronus.de/filez/serclone.zip
I tried it with WinVICE and got some delays now and then, might be my slow computer. SIDplay1 worked better, Acid64 and Goattracker is mentioned as well.
As a bonus the same cable can also be used as a terminal cable, with a few more jumpers you can get 9600bps with Striketerm or Novaterm9.6c. Jim Brain's tcpser will get you out through the network connection of your PC. You can also setup your own BBS.
Perhaps all this is old new but at least it's in the thread now. |

How fast CPU's have you tested with (if thats an issue at all) - to me an external SID solution, especially dual SID would be interesting at some point.
I know that HardSID developers didnt want to waste money on certifying the drivers for newer Windows editions and 64-bit.
Not sure what more there is to do with HardSID in the future or am I wrong? |

There is also SIDBlaster, which is HardSID API compatible (sort of) and works with VICE, SidPlay2, GoatTracker etc.
http://wiki.forskningsavd.se/index.php/SIDblaster
I wrote a drop-in replacement of hardsid.dll for it a couple of years ago and I can make the source code and windows binaries publicly available if anyone's interested. |

I own Sidblaster . Works great on Win8.1 X64, but can't run Acid64 player on it. Maybe someone know how to do it? |

@Isildur: I am talking to Wilfred about it and hopefully we'll be able to fix it. |

@Stein, thanks - great news. Can't understand why Sidblaster is discontinued - such a handy device. |

Hi, they did 64bit driver, however it's unsigned so you need to bypass this part with Windows.
List of software is here https://www.facebook.com/pages/HardSID/83072518350?fref=ts
As to CPU speed I actually haven't thought it can be of any problem. I've used it with Centrino vPro 2 some 2GHz (can't recall now) - no issues as to the device itself.
What's more to do? OSX / Linux drivers :)P |

There's instructions how to get hardsid4 driver installed into 64bit windows. This method works also in forthcoming windows 10 (tested in virtual machine) |

@grue: trying it out at weasel's place. Yet we get a "signtool error: missing filename" when signing the sys file. Interwebs dont spit too much on that..
Any help on getting the driver signed?
Why not put a signed driver on for convenient download anyway? |

Try to change this:
signtool sign /v /s "Self Signed Drivers" /n "Self Signed Drivers" hardsidusb_x64.sys
into this:
signtool sign /v /s "Self Signed Drivers" hardsidusb_x64.sys
and please report if it works that I can change the instructions :) |

Well i am 99% sure we tried about every possible mixture of the parameters including this one.
Even articles i found online seem to propose the same parameters and everything. So it actually should work.. Mhmpf..
We tried /debug to show more information and it seemed somehow that the certificate didn't fit the file.
Yet we always got that "SignTool Error: Missing filename".
Did add the line something like "CertMgr ..... trustedpublisher".
Must admit i never worked with SignTool before, so i don't have any experience with it.
Does this TestSigning ON have to be switched on all the time? I am pretty sure the drivers in that mode even worked without having to sign them.. May be my rusted memories telling me wrong there. |

Yes, testmode needs to be enabled.
I also have disabled UAC in my setup, dunno if it has any difference on this issue. |

the self signed driver only works on the machine it was signed on - maybe that is the problem? |

this is exactly why you cant make a self-signed driver public available, because you "trust" the driver locally within your own "domain" aka the current Windows installation.
So installing this on your second Windows machine wouldn't work either unless you self-sign from that machine too.
(or at least thats how I think it works based on what I have been told so far)
The idea with public certification is that we know who the author/sender is and unfortunately these certificates costs to maintain.
Ofcause if we wanted, we could all donate to a shared certification so they could sign it.
Hehe... I am thinking "Commodore64Certificate" that would be rather cool to have installed in my Windows machines. |
