Recorded videos of demos

Sometimes it is very convenient to watch a recorded video of a demo - e.g. when you don't have access to real HW, Vice or if you simply feel lazy ;)

Sites like youtube, pouet and demoscene.tv carry many recorded videos of demos.

What's the CSDB policy for adding such links to a release?

IMHO this is the worst that can happen to a demo, to be seen on youtube only. What might be fun for live party recordings surely is a major pain for lots of other reasons.

I knew I would get this kinda response from the purists =)

People that don't know about the scene or the HW see a video and prolly don't care whether it is "recorded from real HW" or not, or if the experience is 100% accurate.

People that care and know the platform do know that there may be limitations and discrepancies watching a video. They also know how to download it and run it on real HW.

Personally, a video does it well for me when I need a quick fix =) Therefore I think it would be convenient to have a video link with the release.

On a philosophical view, videos may be a way for the scene to reach out to a broader audience - for what it's worth.

If the demo is recorded on real HW or not may not disturb non-sceners, but I tend to like real HW-recording, mostly because of the accurate SID-sound. I think it is a positive thing to be able to watch demos on for example Youtube when I am at work.

Good discussion! Now, my initial post was really a question. Is there a CSDB policy for how these links are handled? Is there a separate field maybe for a release, or should they be put under external links/downloads?

When you're at work you're not supposed to watch YT and/or demos ;)
Where I work YT is closed aswell as most of the sites, I can see only those allowed after request, but they don't check anyway what one installs on the PC so using Vice it's possible =)
Anyway, besides of hearing a real sid playing a tune, watching a demo on YT sucks in my opinion, I can't stand frames skipped, blocky artifacts and so on. Vice emulation is still better than a flv/mpg, so I don't personally care too much about videos of C64 demos.

I can watch while I work - during lunch for example. But ofcourse, if I wasn't a teacher it would be harder to be master of my own work time, I guess. I am spoiled.

And one more thing: I can watch demos through Youtube on my iPhone, though I wish there was a fully working c64-emulator for iPhone.

neither, links in the release entries should point to the actual release and nothing else. csdb generally encourages using the real thing (tm) :)

Luckily I don't work for fascists. As long as I deliver, my employer is happy. :P

btw. in answer to the first real question. CSDB has no real rules concerning youtube links. we do not plan to make a special field for these links.

Personally i think these links are usefull sometimes and i encourage people to add these links in the user comments or perhaps the trivia section.

but again, i can say we probably wont make rules for this.
enjoy watching demos however you wish.
