disk transfer?
Can anyone tell me of some software to transfer files to a c64 disk using an x1541?
Im having a little trouble with this. I used to use star commander on my old computer, but my new one's parralell port desnt like it, my laptop is no better as although the cable seems to work, but the blue screen of sar commander doesnt show (the progam seems to work fine appart from this) i tried an earlyer version of sc, but it keeps telling me drive #8 doesn't exist.
can anyone help? |

You have to configure your parallel port in the BIOS. You can't use a ECP or EPP parallel port for that cable to work fine...
Greetz!

The problem is not Star Commander, it's your new parallel port in combination with the X1541 cable.
You need an XE1541 or XM1541. |

Actually, even with those cables Star Commander + Windows is just a world of aches and pains. OpenCBM is the way to go for modern operating systems. |

Even for OpenCBM you still need another cable than an X1541. |

Yes, I'd recommend XM-1541 for compatibility, but the only difference from XE-1541 as I've understood it is that two connections are switched. Normal X-1541 doesn't really work in anything but DOS. |

you could try cbm4win to see if it works with that cable but if i remember right it doesnt..
i think you need to make a slight modification to the cable to get it to work
2 cables need changing if i remember rightly
ill see if i can find the place on the internet that you need

just get a mmc64 for your c64 and you dont have to worry about anything that is mention here. the x1541 cabel is pretty much useless now days...

Direct PC to 1541 communication sounds like masochism to me.
Time to bite the bullet and get an RR-Net (ethernet adaptor) or an MMC64 (SD-card reader) :) |

@ d0c & ChristopherJam: both the MMC64 and the RR are far more expensive than a cable.
Besides, I've heard of ppl damaging their 1541 drive after a long periode of transfering at the high speed the RR delivers ;)
All my transfers have been done on a PC running MS/DOS and with 1541 connected with an XE1541 cable. It works, and I'm the first to admit that it's not free of some occasional hassling. Also, it's not very fast.
And yes, the XM1541 is only a matter of swapping 2 cables.
But I'm lazy, okay? ;) |

I have just re-buit my cable as an xm1541, and tried to use it with cbm4win, but I cant get it to work.
Do I need my parallel port to be set a specific way? |

A little more info would be useful. What were you doing/typing exactly, and what happened afterwards? |

As a side step: is OpenCBM any quicker than Star Commander?
I read that the routines are the same... |

There's not much difference speedwise, if any. |

its the first time i have heard that an rr tranfer can damage a 1541... what i know is that people have blown their parallel port on their pc and damaged their 1541 drives with the x1541 cabel... anyway ofcourse the mmc64 is a bit more expensive its also much more than just a cabel, there are many diffrent thing you can use the mmc64 for, than just transfer files...
if you want more info about the mmc64 go here..

hmmmmm... I'm certain the XM1541 cable works with CBM4WIN, as it works for me (i own a XM1541 myself) but anyway, if you're happy using it with SC, then no worries. Infact it's vice versa for me as my XM1541 doesn't work with SC ...could be due to WinXP :( |

the reason your cable probably doesnt work is this!!
you need to double click instcbm.exe before anything will work
once you have done that everything else should work fine |
