Keeping my devices in good shape
Hi,
A fellow told me that the belts of my C64 tape/disk drives and printers tend to "break" with time, unless taken care of. He suggested that I apply some silicone oil to the belts. Here's a picture of the stuff he recommends:
Do the belts really deteriorate over time? Is this a good idea at all? |

Ofcourse they decay, its a rubber mix.
lubing them with silicone is only a plus. |

ready.

best is to use 1541-ii with chinon direct drive mechanism, those are without belt.
Still good to know to use the silicon oil for the belts. |

I am wondering about another device. The 1571.
It is getting more and more "buzzing" from the "trafo".
I guess the capacitors needs to be replaiced with new.
Is the buzzing harming the diskdrive? (more and more ac and less and less dc)

If we're talking about decaying hardware in general: my 1571 produces interference, so badly that monitors that are close by start 'waving'.
Probably also a PSU problem... any ideas how to fix that? |

The el. caps may be dry over those years.Try to replace them or change with higher uF value.I have replaced the caps in my Ocenanic, there are two 100uF.When i measured them one has only half of the capacity and the second was in tolerance. But that seems to be normal for the 21 year old drive..:-) But depends on the capacitor manufacturer too.In CBM HW are better parts from those years than in todays PC crap HW especially caps in the PSU's and MB. |

Cosmos, after you had replaced the caps in your Ocenanic, did the interference disapeared?

There are certain devices for measuring. Some multimeters have capacity measiring, but they have a limited capacity.I have one,but this is limited to 22uF.Better device that I have is an ESR tester. |

Today, the new capasitors came, and i mounted them.
The buzzing did not dissapear, so that means that it is the transformator that buzz.
BUT the interference almost disapeared completly, so it was not waste of money.
The vertical lines on the blue commodore64-startupscreen where stronger before.
Now it takes 25 years before they must be replaced again :)

do you know which capasitors inside c64 that are the most important to replace?
And my PSU (the new white modell) has no screws, how do i open it?

Opening the PSU is a real pain. You need to use a screwdriver and/or a scalpel/knife to remove the bottom cover. The only way to put it back together is by gluing it somehow, but that's the easy part. Once you open the PSU, you'll see it's all sealed. You'll need a larger screwdriver and a hammer (no kidding) to break through all that plastic (or whatever that material is). Once you are done, your PSU will never be as heavy as before. :)

If you have sealed PSU for C64,then you don¨t have to open it.The trafo is completely flooded by epoxy.Open the C64 and check the caps there. The big ones. |

Never seen a drive belt fail among my many 1541 drives.
Some of those were dug up from a pool of mud years ago, and dried using a hair-dryer, they still work to this day.
I tend to think these drives will outlast roaches or possibly survive a nuclear war ;)
(1571 is another thing entirely, so many problems) |

I opened up my brown powersupply, and the plastic was melted. So I must by some new components and fix it.
If you wonder, why so clear photo, I have "Schneider - Kreuznach" lens on my digital camera :)
