offtopic, but desperate: "Verfiying DMI pool" lock up problem
Help!
On my other computer while booting, probably when tryng
to start windows from the HD, the display shows
VERIFYING DMI POOL and locks up completely,
changing setups/config in BIOS didnt help,
Then I made a boot disk with NTFS4DOS (http://www.avira.com/de/downloads/avira_ntfs4dos.html)
but that didnt work either, tries booting from floppy drive
but locks as before.
I suspect a virus, maybe also hardware failure.
Can anybody help what to do? How can I boot? Any tricks via BIOS?
I run XP on a 600Mhz thingie. |

hrm... I remember the 'verifying from DMI pool' thing.. but I dunno what the problem is...:/
also.. as it's a 600MHz box, if you re-install, give Windows 2000 a try. the core is nearly the same as XP, but a lot friendlier for slower machines.
also, booting from a Linux live-CD may work... for example Ubuntu Linux.

did that happen suddenly or what?
try unattaching all devices on IDE and floppy and see if error like "boot failure - no boot devices found" appears.
BTW I run manually tuned winxp sp2 on p2-366/192MB RAM , when I need more power then I overclock it to 440MHz via PLL chip runtime reprogramming. it's okay for the tasks I do (network checking, programming, irc/icq and so on chatting, web browsing, watching movies (including DVD)).

many thanks for your messages, in the meanwhile my second computer fucked up, this is a day of fucking bad luck.
froze while booting WIN and when scanning the system I get the message of a damaged boot sector. Goddamnit, after many hours now I managed to recreate WIN to use it properly (e.g. accessing the net), guess I gotta repair the boot sector with a WIN CD.
The other computer is still freezing on 'Verifying DMI Pool', I tried most of the hints which are given on the net (and also on Scout's link) already before posting here.. failed. will check it out later or tomorrow, I'm goddamn tired.
I want a machine with os on chip like the old Commie, argh! |

another idea to check might be, the pc itself is it old?
sometimes after a long time the cmos battery might need replacing on the motherboard.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!
I managed to get both systems work again (the first 100%, I'm checking the other one right now)
Thanks in both cases to the utility Partition Table Doctor (very much recommended) http://www.ptdd.com/
It seems everything with the hd physically is okay, my suspicion it's a trojan.
