How fast CPU is needed for WinVice/VicePlus
I'm thinking of picking up an ASUS EEE to use when I go to LCP08 (yeah, I know, blasphemy, but I'm to lazy to lug around the complete setup with 1084 and all).
Anyone know if the CPU (Celeron M @ 600MHz) is fast enough to run WinVICE, and preferably also VicePlus (for some DTV coding)?

winvice will work fur shure. maybe you have to disable some "extras" like pal-emu and sid-oversampling to get full framerate.

eeepc comes with linux /xandros (debian alike).
When you add GCC you can easyly compile viceplus (did that).
Runs quite well.
I recommend eeecontrol to clock the CPU in case you need it.
Not sure if it runs well with pal and SID together. Rather not but you wont need pal-emu anyway for dev.

Yeah, PAL emulation and all that is not necessary, I just want to be able to preview stuff that I've coded running at realtime framerates.
I'll probably install WinXP on mine (I want to use the same tools etc. as I do on my normal workstation), but I don't think that should affect performance all that much.
The EEE I'm looking at (ASUS EEE 900) apparently has the CPU @ 900MHz default as well, so I guess I should be good to go! |

it might be better to run windows 2000 ( if possible ), as it uses less resources == more CPU for the emu.

no, appearently not :) it seems to be a weird windows/direct x issue.
infact you can speed it up significantly by installing linux in a VM and running vice on that =P |

If it's not a fake, this video might answer some of your questions:

The quality is very low, but I guess that CCS64 is used here. Maybe it's worth waiting for the EeePC901 coming out soon? |
