AKA:
Nobodies Are Taking Over
Founded by :
Image & Megasnail on 1 January 1988
Group Types :
Demo Group, Cracker Group
Base Country :
United Kingdom
Trivia :
NATO started as an UK based group, later became an international group with secions in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.
NATO (Nobodies Are Taking Over) was founded in 1988. It was choosen because of its forceful title and that it hinted at their disgust of the mudane.
With the coming together of Megasnail (Sysfinders), Image (therein known as Munch from The Quadrant), and Group A. The latter was inactive from the outside.
After a brief period, Partners in Crime joined. This gave us Zero, Crime, Steve, and a few other characters who I never met.
Warewolf was representing NATO in North America. When Warewolf joined Exodus, NATO started exclusively trading with them.
The next acquistion happened when Megasnail invited the whole of the Noise group to join NATO. Tiger accepted along with Conix, Croydon, Maduplec, and Drax. This gave NATO a magazine (Nails) and an exceptional demo divsion, B.U.D.S.(Brain Using Demo Section of NATO).
Shortly after, Zenobits were asked to join. Greco and Rygar accepted. The former gave NATO a magazine called NATO Smasher (aligned to his therein communist politics no doubt) and helped Tiger with Nails. Rygar wrote a level packer variation of the Cruel Compressor.
Oh - For a brief period in 1989, Mik from Pulsar and Nosah from ex-DCS joined before both decided to join the reformed Doughnut Cracking Service.
In 1989 there was also a Dutch section around DRM & Metallica and some time later Topic, which produced a few snapping disk holders.
Other:
04.02/2004, Dishy says...Well, I just downloaded Dodger and Matcher at www.c64.ch, and in the first scrolltext Maduplec writes this: "If you vote for this demo vote only for Maduplec or NATO. Please don´t vote for the BUDS, as it´s only a trademark I use................................"

I have adapted the Nato US history a bit based on the Exodus history I complied a while ago by going through their early releases and with some help from Dave/Grim Reaper.
My version:
Exodus was formed in 06/1988 by Cult. The period when Exodus started trading with NATO was when Warewolf (former NATO US) joined Exodus (this was in Feb 1989). In 04/1989 Mayhem (incl Stormbringer, Jimmy Z, Gazoo) joined Exodus. That's when Exodus was really kicking.
Please correct me if I am wrong... |

NATO also had a German section as well as a Dutch one. |

Greco had more to do a magazine called NATO Smasher than Nails if I remember correctly. Nonetheless, he worked on both. |

Yep, NATO would exclusively export cracks to Exodus, with the latter originally being NATO-USA but not in title. |

Westbam is correct. Exodus was exclusive with NATO as in meaning the only group they would import their cracks to. Word! |

One of the best groups on c64, I think!Lot´s of cool members like Tiger, Maduplec, Megasnail, Macro Nit, DRAX etc. etc. Did great in both cracking and demo-scene! So I really liked this group, which is also the reason why I´ve tried to clear up this profil and add all the old NATO members and their functions in NATO, so it can be more correct..
When I get a cable and the time I´ll also upload their cracks.
NATO also did some legal work with Fairlight!
NATO also had a great Danish-section.
NATO released the papermag Nails. Tiger and Greco were main-editors!
NATO was exclusive with the well-known US importing group Exodus!
Nato US-boards:
Jimmy Z was running Nato Hq Wares Galore (later it was XDS hq) before he quit and went Amiga/PC. This board was replaced by the famous Wild Wares / XDS/NATO Hq (SysOp Gazoo)...
Flyboy/Exodus was sysop for Fabulous Disaster.
I have not added Warewolf, Gazoo, Flyboy, Jimmy Z, Grim Reaper and the famous NTSC fixer Stormbringer to the list of members, as I do not remember precisely, if the Exodus members were also full-time NATO members or "only" exclusive with NATO, but I actually think they were also full-time members!?!
(Thanks to Westbam/Legend for the "Exodus/Nato" infos!)
