newcomer, i've just bought a c64 with 300 programs

I've been looking for a c64 to make music for quite some time and I finally found one for £15, a real bargin you'll are agree. The music programs that I got with it are as follows; ubiks music, the music system, drum studio and soundtracker 64. Some I can't get to down load, I'm thinking maybe the tape heads need demagnetizing. Has anyone ideas why this could be?

Maybe they just need re-alignament. You have to turn a small screw above of the them. This fixing proved to be useful to me in the past. You can also try to clean them with a tape head cleaner. Actually you'd better try this last trick first, since it's the easiest.

tape was out of date already in the end of the 80s man. Get a diskdrive and a fastload cartridge, thats the most spartanic setup I can imagine.

for choosing a music editor read this:

or try goat tracker.

cheers

Try to clean up the header too, maybe it's dirty. Even tapes, which was not in touch for few years are still good.

The tape can be also damaged. Then you will do nothing.

Without a diskdrive it's pointless to load any of the editors since you won't be able to save anything that you might create.

Cheers for the information.
so a disc drive is the safe option. I've been listening to a band called treewave http://www.treewave.com/ they use a c64 to create music, they are the reason I bought a c64 as they have created thier own software . What sort of disc drive do I need to get? What is everyone's favourite software?

1541 is just standard. oceanic clones are fine too.

you may want also 1570 or 1571 if you can get them at reasonable price

1541, 1541-II, 1570, 1571 = 5,25" disc drives.
1581, FD-2000, FD-4000 = 3,5" disc drive.

And if thinking of ordering a FD-2000 drive from Maurice Randall (he is making them), prepare to wait a couple of years before getting it.

I ordered and paid my FD-2000 drive in November 2004 and on the phone a few days ago he told me he might start with the batch in which my drive will come from within a few months (let's keep our fingers crossed for that).

1541-II's (the best ones) and even 1581's are almost always available from German e-bay, and I have never encountered any problems ordering c64-stuff from abroad.

A Retro Replay and a MMC64 is a really good buy aswell. They are available new and will solve amongst other things the PC-c64 connections easily, also for a novice.
