Joe style images

Years ago while looking at an image in a magazine, looking really close at the print, as the image was a still from a film, the idea hit me, that a similar idea might be possible on 64. That was around 1993. After some messing around, I gave up, and thought the idea on 64 was nuts.

Then in recent times, having seen some of Joe / WD images, and the patterns he uses to create images, reminded me of the idea above.

Today I had a mess around, and I think I hit on something that is not too far off what Joe / WD images might start of looking like. Obviously taking the idea beyond 4 colours, anti aliasing, extra polish would be the next step in the phase.

Another step might include ever more inventive patterns that fit, that generate the extra shades.

archmage ? i just fail to see how some more or less well established techniques (and that for a long long time, probably pre-dating the c64) qualify as "joe style" :)

you fail big time in distuingishing joe style and halftoning/posterizing. You could have just as said you fail to see the difference between oil painting technique and Van Gogh's style.

to conclude: you fail to distuingish style & technique.

maybe i am. its no secret that i am no big fan of this "style". infact to me there is often little "style", and mostly boring technique when it comes to this kind of pictures. you could say they are codepron, but for gfx people =P

The purpose of my (original) post was to highlight an idea I had back in 1993. I used Joe / WD as an example, as some of his work comes close to those ideas (technique wise, not composition wise). This in turn inspired me to experiment with what I view as, similar technique. To make things clear, my post was not intended in anyway to ‘devaluate’ Joe’s work, as I really like some of what Joe has released over the past years :)

‘Joe style images’ was possibly the wrong title for the thread. ‘Shader’ style might have made sense ;)

I’ve some plans to revisit the original 1993 ideas, and if they work out, I’ll release them / it ;D

@Sander - I'm doing fine, thanks for asking. C64 wise, I hope to see a demo released soon. Its more a graphic collection, with a demo edge. As time moves on, the images are becoming less and less relevant (aged). Still, they had purpose at the time. Still, I hope some gain something from it, as I'm liking it lots 8)

WEC: Sharp, looks ok there with the posted image: Rough to technical though, pretty blatant and without order and direction.
It works pretty much the same as I’ve tried out in my own artwork: Every second jump on the diagonal a new set of strings, why?
Well it corresponds to an old-fashioned method in the jumps of chessboard-dithering. Simple rules derived from old behaviour.

I was investigating halftone techniques earlier this year, but not as the end of means of representation but for the study of grain and materiality.
As with the first Beds of Green to the latest Hatching No. 1.

I’m not interested in technique more than for the synergies they develop. I do that for some time till I’m bored with the result, usually very often and very quick.

Technique is one thing and representation another. I usually try to find something adequate for the experimentation I do. I wouldn’t call that a style.

Style or what?... I think you Joe create some really interesting images a lot of the times when I get to see them, and to me that is your style what you do. Because in a way I can say... hey that is joe that created that... and that is so cool, because then you have a style that is becoming your brand instead of creating a lot of art that could be created by anyone, there are so many talented minds or craftsmen out there today, not only in c64 world I mean.

I think that is something you have shown to develop and finalize in a splendid way. Think a bit like this... when you see an apple product you know it is apple... if you see a salvador dali painting you know it is salvador dali.... it is a bit like this with you too for me... You have created something that the viewers regard is your style, and again, that is a good thing.

And most important: Whan someone developes a product there comes a lot of copies after the success of the original, that is why the original developer artist or manufacturer have to be on the track that they have, because keeping on doing their stuff better only creates a better version of the original and thet takes years, but if one is clever and take the design or style or what we should call it in different directions but with the same devotion and not falling off track I often see winners... a copy can be better but it still resembles the original and that is what the public will think of, the brand, like Joe! The original idea or thought or style can be moved further, in the right direction. And a copycat often fail to do that.

Wile Coyote: You have created a very good image here I think and if it is automatic it is supernice, I would very much know how developing goes here because I like the style you have created, and it resembles the print patterns often used in print, it is so cool to see progress on these... yu might be the origin in test and thought here and it would be cool to see what direction you follow, and what joe follows in the future here.

Today already a lot of people can do the effect that Geir Tjelta did in echoes, but we will think that it were geir that created that sound. A mark that is... like your art to me... it were and is something different, new and very fresh.
