Is it still okay to upload my own game modification / crack here as a release?

Hi all,

I patched this game to use a 1541 as a game controller instead of a 1530: https://github.com/tixiv/aquarius_1541

I was wondering whether it is okay for me to upload this here as a crack release, because I guess that's the category it falls in. The help says that for cracks it is now frowned upon to releasse them on csdb directly, but that was actually what I was planning to do while creating it.... I put it on git hub for now, but I would like the original .d64 to be on here as a release.
So my question is what are the rules on this? Am I allowed to create the release for this crack myself here?

Legit of course. I already commented to that on the original game entry.

Okay, thanks!
Then I'll create it before other comments on my release end up on the original

How do you use a 1541 as a "controller" ? :D

Hey can you also make a version that can be played by hitting c64 with a hammer? ;-D

Aquarius 1541

The screenshot says it all ;-)

It's using the write protect sensor of the 1541 additionally to the play button of the datasette as the original did ;-)

I'm not that much into abusing hardware so it breaks. That's why "weak haptic feedback" is the default option. Our 1541's are 40ish years old... Although playing with the rumble on high is much more fun....ow well....

Maybe make a hammer-driven controller and connect it to the datasette port with the original game. And use a 6V relay for controlling a car alternator for the rumble.... oh my... the ideas....

Very cool innovation! I had been wondering if there was any way to use the drive as a controller.

I'm not sure if this would qualify as a crack. It seems more like you've modified an open-source game to create something new (and awesome).
While it's true that some cracks nowadays might be made like this, a crack typically includes an intro and an optional trainer or extension. This allows players to disable the modifications and still access the original version of the game.
Just my thoughts on the matter!

Yeah it shouldn't be labelled as "crack" at all.

@Crackheads... LOL reminds me of the time when I started discussing whether a category like Mod or Hack would make sense some 15 years ago... so it's a VERY old discussion. And some introslapping statwanking advocates will already wield pitchforks and torches just because I point that out...*

Anyway, if we don't live long enough to see a category "Mod" or "Hack" (or "Patch"), imho "Crack" is _currently_ the one that fits anything "modifying and releasing any original game by anyone else than the owner of the copyright" best. If you are too honest to label it crack, label it "Import" (*ducks and covers, prepared for running*), just don't call it Schnitzel...

PS: Nothing against the author or the release. At least he shows the right spirit by sharing/discussing his doubts before he even upped it - using the term "patched". I felt like that, too, when I joined the circus, read some global forces of cracking mailbombs, even took part in some textwall discussions... until I gave up debating and focussed on actually doing stuff...

*As a CSDb mod and someone releasing some "crack" once a year or so, I can tell you: If you consider opening Pandora's box and re-label everything in the database that is currently declared crack though it was
a) open-source
and/or even
b) unprotected
then good luck with that, will grant you a lot of work and hatred popularity :D

People who call releases that had no protection 'cracks' are lamers. Any rls charts that list these as 'cracks' are lame. It doens't matter if you add a bible of docs or +1k trainers, it is still no crack. If no protection was removed, nothing was cracked. Any lamer with a freezer can add a trainer.
