Release id #11584 : Dutch Breeze

I once had a beta/test/preview version (I got it from Thunder/BML) of Dutch Breeze containing other music during the Cow loader and Flip the Flop.
I lost it tho... :-(
Does any1 have this version?

I do have some previews of the demo, some very early ones, including old graphics that have been retouched a lot for the released version, and a party (Silicon party) version with loader bugs, but that preview contains the final music. I've made a small farm tune for the cow animation, to accompany the gfx when I sent them to the programmers, but I've not seen a version that had different music in the Flip the Flop part. But it sure is possible some previews were made that I haven't seen, I was busy with Disposable Hero at that time. Maybe ION has got those previews you mention.

Yeah! That was certainly in the version I had.
I remember telling Thunder that they should use this music in the final version.
They didn't...
Btw, I'm not sure of the music in Flip the Flop. Maybe you're right.
I remember the loaderbugs tho. Every part was loaded by hand at the democompo.

We used 'skunk funk', covered by Reyn. So, still very good music for a Cow eating skunk weed.

i think that test-loader was on one of the domination or vandalism news spread disks.

You might want to check all of those releases, i'm 100% sure it's a bonus on one of those..

btw, it featured the Venz Venz Venz song ;') with a boy+girl sitting under an umbrella.

-------

after posting this i suddenly realised this wasn't what you meant.. well.. ;) maybe other ppl would like to see that other loader, so i'll just let the post sit here..

Yes, it was an idea, to have letters fall down on the umbrella, and bounce of to make some sentences..

I wonder if there is any way to skip the 'wet-girl-part' in emulator (vice)?

in vice you can get past that part by turning on 1351-mouse emulation and going crazy with your pc-mouse.

I could skip it by pressing a joystick button 3 (Which you had to set in CCS64 iirc, don't know about Vice)

Here's a music question I always wanted to ask about this great demo...

The intro music (not the one with the dragon, the very first opening tune.) is of course composed by the one and only Jeroen Tel.

What confuses me though is that the tune is known to be the tune for Robocop 3. Robocop 3 was released sometime in 1992 (and so was AFAIK, the movie itself!), where Dutch Breeze was released in December 1991.

So did Jeroen compose this tune exclusively for Ocean Software, or Blackmail?
Or was it originally a tune he made for fun?

Originally composed for Robocop 3.
Jeroen promised us a few tunes (3 in total), so I went to his place to pick them up. And like every good artist, he didn't have them finished (he hadn't started anyway), because there are more important things in life than being artistic all the time. He gave me 2 tunes and finished the 3rd on the fly (dragon tune). He gave it to us before it got released for the good reason Ocean hadn't paid him (yet). The beef behind Super Monaco Grand Prix is unknown to me.

Sorry, bit off topic, but it reminded me of something.

Scout (or anyone else) I was just wondering,
I remember releasing a collection of linked GP intro's as a 'demo' to the competition on a silicon party. I believe it was the same party as the one Dutch Breeze was shown just to piss of Airwolf for playing that annoying tune (was it from T99, my memory is lacking here) on his stereo over and over again..

Anyhow, it would put a smile on my face if that release some how was on someones disk left over from the party?

I think i used my cheap lable Bel-Air on the release (but it could have been under rappellkiste too).

No idea if this helps... but the .zip located at:

ftp://c64.rulez.org/pub/c64/Demos/b/Black_Mail/Dutch_Breeze.zip..

contains only 1 side of the demo. I would remove it.

I think you forgot to read the thread here. You're right, that's Reyn final tune, but the thread was about the DB previews.

No, even if I did, I'm not going to upload them, because they look like crap.

I can assure you, no Reyn/Jeroen music in those that's not released. Only this: FLI scroll at first contained the same music made in MoN routine, Falco converted it to his player. The MoN routine version is not released. Same goes for The End part, the Deadlock version is MoN routine, the DB version is 20CC routine.

The G.F.X. II part at first contained the same music, only small differences (melody mainly).

The other music by Reyn (Kramer, Cow, Flip Flop) were made for a game (I think Turbo Charge) but he released them in DB.

lotsa pointless trivia after all.

I was thinking more about the demo. Not the music. Anyway. I think the trivia came to an end on this topic.

Hey guys,

The test version for Dutch Breeze that Scout and Hein are talking about can be found on side two of Domination #13 released in 1999. However, I've created a separate entry for Loader for Dutch Breeze also.

Dutch Breeze is without doubt one the best demos on the C64, and would make my Top 10 every time.
If Dutch Breeze were to be released in 2011 would it have the same impact as it did in 1991 ?

When I think about Dutch Breeze, the parts I remember include:
The Intro with ‘that’ music, and the Dragon flying over a well drawn landscape.
The funny Cow Loader.
The part with the 5 impressive pictures with the very cool fade on / off effect.
The FLI Elite style scroller (probably the most impressive part)

If seeing Count Zero’s post, I decided to check out Dutch Breeze for the 1st time in years. I had forgotten about the part featuring the many pictures (taken from well known images by various artists). ‘The End’ part with the good logo and great text effect. The demo is shorter than I remember, feeling like it uses just over a single disk side. As great as the graphics and code are, for me the real star of the show is the music - it hasn’t aged one bit.

What are the chances of a Dutch Breeze II ?

On a nostalgic point, I always remember Riot/Entropy receiving Dutch Breeze via snail mail and showing it to me. It was the best thing we’d had ever seen on C64.

I don't think Black Mail has/had plans to start with Dutch Breeze II.

I'd like to hear more about why the tunes were converted from the MON to the 20CC routine ? technical reasons ? rastertime usage ?

Both players used about same rastertime and both players were available as source code.

I think Falco thought it to be a fun hobby to recreate the tunes. For the Deadlock tune he even made a Pepsi challenge demo, asking BML members to point out the 20CC version.
