Release id #17429 : Vandalism News #43

Well, as I've heard of at least two more people who failed to get this to run on a real machine I decided to move my goof comment to the forum:

I tried all I can, but I just can't get this to work on an otherwise fine real C64 (tried old/new one and various disk drives). It neither works in Vice 1.16. Anyone experienced similar problems (intro runs fine, then loads a couple of tracks, then dies with the drive led on, drive head on track 12)?
It works in CCS64, though... ;-)

Works fine in Vice 1.16 under Debian GNU/Linux with True Drive Emulation and 1541-II as drive model.

Perhaps you should run x64 from a command-line/shell ? I've noticed that a lot of fastloaders/irq-loaders crash when running Vice from a file-manager/browser by double-clicking on a .d64-file..

No problems running VN#43 with my Vice 1.16 (Win32).

Haven't tried it on a real C64 yet.

No probs with either C64 or emulator.
Maybe your transfer makes errors when copying to real disk, but that doesn't explain why it won't work on VICE..

Thanks for the feedback, folks, but I got it to work now, finally! Got up the old rusty 1541-C from the basement and that did the trick. Still strange why it doesn't work on my other two 1541-IIs and WinVice 1.16.
Now off to read the mag...
(for some odd reason I can't get used to read C64 mags on the emulator) ;-)

Actually I noticed some fast loaders in games and demos feel better when used on old 1541 disk drives. Somehow it seems old 1541s can better handle their age. My first 1541 disk drive received in 1982, which is the most used one, still works fine, while some new 1541-IIs have problems.

Works fine on WinCICE 1.14/1.16, CCS64 and most importantly, and what it's designed for, C64/c plus both 1541 and 1541-II.

Real thing is best!

well, I have used http://www.oxyron.de/html/wc64.html no transfer errors/disk errors shown, I have tried half a dozen 1541-II didn't read at 2nd loading phase at all, a 1541-I just blinks.
well, I will try re-transfer with another drive now, but I a m not going to replace always drives only for Vandalism if it finally works then. This is a really nasty loader! Old issues of your diskmag works.
You should either switch back, or heavily improve that thing!

That is just my opinion. If it doesn't work after a 2nd transfer try, I will just give it up and do something else, I am sorry.

UPDATE: Tried now all drives I own, doesn't work, neither with or without RR, with transfer from another drive, neither 1541-I or 1541-II, the loader must be very nasty. (or me pretty stupid?). No idea

Thanks for confirming! So I will have to wait till they release a fixed version.
Ah and thanks for your great "WarpCopy64", Graham! :)

Can somebody do a quick fix for that loading problem?
thanks in advance!

Nafcom: we won't release a "fixed" version. Regarding the loaders, we have not changed the loader we use in the outfit. Krill's loader and the intro are of course the new things added.

For those with any troubles, just load the 2nd file on side A which will take you directly into the mag, skipping the intro.

Regarding testing the magazine. I've tested it on my C64C with 1541 AND 1541 II and works fine on both. I cannot vouch for emulators, but have checked it in Win Vice with True Drive Emulation and it works fine.

I believe it doesn't work with every single 1541-II, problem for me is, what is making it work on mine yet not on others? Only if I knew how to code and had some drives to play around with.
