Maybe a GoatTracker SidCompo

Hello CSDb people I got a new Atari flashback game console and really like to donate it for a GoatTracker SidCompo. It's the Atari Flashback 1 so to be totally honest it's not really a Atari 2600 inside it's a very hack able NES on a chip with remakes of some popular Atari games on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Flashback

Ok before you burn me to the ground I know it's a very small price for a lot of work, but the real goal of this project is to make a tribute to the GoatTracker scene. You can help other GoatTracker users and provide them with new songs to learn from and that would be great! Think about all the instruments we can use and assemble if there are people willing to attend this competition.

If someone like to say something about this idea or give me some advice or help in some way please do.

Greetings xaMpi

GoatTracker scene? Are you kidding? :-D
How about the people who use other tools?

People should have a go at learning sound programming themselves, instead of having some sound library.
The fun in doing c64 music, lies in being able to make your own sounds that fit your music.
Learn things the hard way, eventhough nowadays, it has become much easier.

As much as I would like to win an Atari Flashback it would be a nightmare to hear dozens of tracks using my instruments, really. That doesn´t mean I am not willing to share knowledge but simply giving away presets to people (who maybe don´t have the patience to put some effort in working out instruments programming on their own) doesn´t seem right.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. I wouldn't mind helping people with making sounds.
But they would have to learn the format of the editor they choose to work with.
Perhaps there could be a thread about sid sound programming,
where people could ask about how to make certain sounds or so and others could reply.
In the end, the ones who need sounds would learn much more than just having a lot of presets to use.

That is a great idea and maybe better, because the real goal of my post is to share knowledge nothing more!

There really aren't any shortcuts when it comes to making good music, not with GoatTracker or with any other editor. If you don't know how the SID works then you're bound to do mistakes, because even premade instruments depend on knowledge of how for example ring modulation and filters work. That said, looking at others' tunes to learn techniques isn't a bad idea, but the example tunes distributed with GoatTracker should more than suffice for that purpose.

And I know of no "GoatTracker scene", despite being an avid GoatTracker user since 2003...

But a active GoatTracker scene would be great!

As in, a "GoatTracker" scene separate from the rest of the C64 scene? Being a C64 scener I don't see the point. The C64 scene isn't exclusive in that matter...

I See your point and your probably wright, but I would like to see one and by the way I am trying to learn about the SID.

Then how many C64 composers are using GoatTracker?

CRD, Linus, Radiantx, Jammer, Hein, Zabutom and many more. you may note there were TWO Goat Tracker compos in the past - all sources from the last one are included in every GT2 release archive.
some good internet competition would be great though, now that there's no annual c64.sk sid compo. remember the 3rd edition? best music compo ever. i think.

I wonder though.

The SID "scene" is a very "exclusive" one already. Why narrow down the number of possible participants even further by restricting it to Goattracker ?

There are still some of us, who use "native" C64 editors. You know?

What Jeff said.

xaMpi: Simply open a new thread and post your questions regarding instrument design there. I am sure a lot of people will be glad to help.
