Those emulator drive samples that sound nothing like a 1541
... seriously, WHY? :D |

Its a challenge for Quiss to turn such horrible output into a symphony :) |

Anyone feel free to contribute a physical modeling implementation! |

I think i have them somewhere here, courtesy of a Forum64 member. |

I never noticed that VICE had drive sound emulation until now. Based on this thread I was expecting a lot worse, but it sounds OK to my untrained ear. I will now turn the setting off but I am willing to test again as soon as the physical modeling implementation is available. |

Quoting jabit sounds OK to my untrained ear This is interesting. I've had at least 2 people saying something similar, and i assume they have heard what a real 1541 or 1541-II sounds like. (Those emulator samples originate from UAE, thus represent a 3.5" drive.)
The difference is painfully obvious to my ears (and not only mine, afaik), but maybe some people can't tell - just like cyan/turquoise is just "green" or "blue" to some other people. =) |

I have to admit, I didn't test much at first, just the basic motor spinning and track change sounds when loading a file. But now that you said this I had to try some more and and yes, the difference is obvious when comparing with a real 1541 side-to-side.
Still, even knowing this and right after doing those comparisons, VICE creates a surprisingly good impression of a 5.25" drive for me. Probably it's enhanced by looking at the familiar blue basic screen :) |

Denise has better samples (from a 1541 even)
The big(ger) problem is, that just playing the samples doesn't cut it, they need to be chopped into pieces and reconstructed depending on stepping etc, so "drive music" will work as well.
Someone needs to step up(!) and do it |

Never tried the ones currently on there so I couldn't say how they compare to my physical drives.

Exactly. I think it might be possible to record in an automated fashion as some impulse responses, then applying some logic when the tail is cut short by the stepper motor applying force. It is probably quite some work though.
The sound of computer peripherals might be one of the least thought of artifact for preservation. |

One step at a time.
Replacing that abomination of just wrong samples is easy.
Proper drive sound model, not so easy, something for later. |
