Best Format to distribute demos etc?
I've recently retrieved my C64 (and 300+ floppies from the loft) and have found a whole load of music, demos etc from 1988 - 1992 that I'm sure people would be interested in.
So, not that I've got my hands on a XM1541 cable and can transfer all this stuff to the PC, what are everyone's preferences for the way to distribute this stuff?
Obviously if it's a multi-part demo, then it's obvious that you just use a .d64 disk image...
But what about small stand alone files... music with players etc? Just distribute the .prg or what?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Quote: What's wrong with gnuzip? That already works perfectly in WinVICE.
Hmm, didn't know that. Still I'd prefer "normal" zip, as that one's easier to use. |

My two cents would be "normal zip" and in a d64 image. Most of the mags on mags.c64.org are in this format (with exceptions such as .prg files).
Priority #1 is to get the stuff that is not available on the net converted. This seems to be the biggest hurdle for most people.

I'm sure the VICE people had docs on which zip plugig/application could be installed and configured so WinVICE could handle zipped D64s. I did hav it working once until I updated WinVICE a few times and got lazy. |

"normal" is somewhat easier to use when _creating_ the image. gnuzip is easier to use afterwards, because it works right out of the box in VICE. :) Winzip has no problems unzipping them if you wish to do that. gnuzipped images (.gz) are easier to handle in the tools because they contain only one file. This means they can be handled exactly the same way as a regular d64.
Although, I think that a .zip option would be great if it allowed you to put several .d64's into a .zip, and automatically put them into VICE's flip-list. |

Thanks for all the feedback - I guess .d64 is the way to go! ;-)
Did a massive transfer session last night and it appears that there are more damaged discs than I thought. Found quite a bit of my stuff that hasn't ever seen the light of day though!
A follow on question then...
When adding releases to the CSDb.. do you upload the same .d64 for everything on the same disc or is it best practice to create separate .d64's for each?
Thanks again for the comments. |

Greetings Bizzmo,
it is possible to upload a D64 once and then give all the programs the same download link.
Most people prefer it this way and it saves you a lot of time. |

So stop being lazy, find out how it's done and tell us!!
(Yes, I'm even lazier than you) |
