XE1541 and Windows

I used to transfer between 1541 and PC several years ago but I had pure DOS mode back then and programs like Starcommander.
I downloaded Starcommander today and found that it started in a dos-window making me realize I dont have any DOS mode anymore. There is some winnt/2000/XP support in StarCommander but I could not get it to work in Vista (yes..V....ista, my only PC with a parallel port).

So.. what tool is best for transferring data between XE1541 and Windows V.....vvv....v.ista.

Else I will have to dig out my old Pentium200 I have stored somewhere :)

Looks like a combo-solution for me: I fetch my dusty p200 so I can transfer some stuff quick AND I will order a XM/XE adaptor ...... AND get the Chameleon64 when it becomes available :-D

XE can be transformed to XM by swapping wire 4+6 or 4+5 in the one end, simply. But you have to solder a bit.. Check the diagrams on SC homepage.

Grrr!! STOP giving incorrect, incomplete and otherwise useless advice... Convert your XE1541 cable to an XM1541 cable simply by swapping pins 5 and 6 in the DIN plug. If the DIN plug can be opened there's even a good chance you can do this without soldering anything by just swapping the pins.
But as ELA already stated.. opening the plug is not an option... so more useless, but this time correct, advice at least :-P

I have the XA-1541 cable, and it works really fine with Starcommander and the 1571 diskdrive.
And i run it in clean ms-dos.

Update: I could not get my old PC to work any better with the XE1541 than with my new one with Vista/4core cpu etc. After a lot of testing I have concluded that my XE cable is broken (it is over 10 years old at least) :-(

I am now trying to decide whether to buy a XM-adaptor or go straight for a 1541 Ultimate (since Chameleon64 isn't in sale yet and they have no more MMC64's in stock)... Decisions decisions...

ELA, buy or build an XM or XA cable right away, save money for a 1541u and when you have that, sell the cable again ;-)
Or keep both, just in case...

I am afraid that I cannot see a single good reason to go for the X(A/E/M)-1541 cable solution in these days. What would in fact be one such reason? (I don't think there is any.)

As i said before, pure ms-dos can be reached from any pc, just boot to ms-dos.

The important is the right type of lpt port.

But if you have a large desk, you can ofcourse buy a old pc and have it next to the 64.

Using nibtools/mnib and friends to dump and remaster original disks (together with a parallel cable)?
