Last Ninja - Protection modifys Disk Drives permanently?
Hello folx!
"Allerdings bekam System 3 Probleme wegen Laufwerksproblemen. Durch den Kopierschutz wurden Diskettenlaufwerke verstellt und machten diese unbrauchbar, wie ein Leser einer britischen C64 Zeitschrift bemerkte."
https://www.c64-wiki.de/index.php/System_3
Is that true that the protection from Last Ninja causes a permanent modification to Disk Drives (Disk Drive damage)? |

afaik some protections move the drive head to a high track (>41) and in some cases this jams the head and you have to open the drive and manually move it back again. |

Sending an "init" will move the head back without the need to open it, usually. |

that usually refers to protections that would bump the head (like when you are formatting a disk) - and its mostly just bolloks. |

sometimes the head got stuck in my 1541I, issueing a format command with no disk inserted always fixed it. |

the difference is: if you format a disk (or init the drive) the head moves to the other direction ( -> track 0 )
and as i wrote "in some cases" doesn't mean it happens all the time on every drive ;-) |

no. the protections that are referred to as "misaligning the drive" are those that bump the head to track 0. |

well i'm not 100% sure but protections like the pirateslayer v1 checked for a pattern on track 37/36 and if that failed the head rushed to track 41 (or further if possible) and sometimes this was a problem for some drives. i have no idea why they got stuck
...maybe because the head wasn't meant to move that far out - since track 35 ist the regular end
or the drives were dirty... idk |

the regular end is track 40 :) its only a problem if you go higher than that. |
