old VIC vs new VIC
There seems to be someone (I won't mention his name ;)), whose effort I appreciate, but he's uploading screenshots with old VIC colours (or something that should resemble it).
As far as I know there are not many scene artists that worked with old VIC, else the gradients would be different than the way they are. For example, new VIC gradients like brown, orange, pink, light grey, standard gradient, seen everywhere. If this gradient was drawn on old VIC, the artist would've used brown, pink, orange, light grey, but the artist didn't. So it is almost certain the graphics are done with new VIC and not with old VIC.
Frankly, I think the screenshots don't do the graphics justice, how horrible the graphics may be, so it would be nice if the one who's uploading the screenshots with old VIC palet considers this before uploading it. I mean, repect to the artist, man. :) |

Not everything is New VIC though, so automatically isn't a good idea.
The classic example is the 9,8,7,1 gold bar. |

oh fixing ugly oversaturated palettes automatically is always a good idea, regardless of vic revision :=) |

oh, that one looks nice on both VICs. Gold always looks nice, gold rocks, gold is a scener's best friend. |

The step between orange and yellow is much smoother on an old vic.
Pretty stupid to design for an old vic nowadays though. :) |

true, that.. but we can't add too much light grey or pink to make the transition smoother on new VIC, because then it will loose it's shininess. |

Like Ocean... they seemed to do all their games for the old VIC. Even the games released only for the C64GS too... *bummer*
Old VIC pics look better on new VICs then the other way around though... but still not nice...

You talk about the VIC as if there were only two revisions? Like an "old" and a "new" VIC? Mind the big differences in color and intensity on a VIC from a breadbin and a C64C. I'll start marking my images in the future with [VIC-II 6572/6573 ONLY!]
The PAL revisions are as follows:
MOS Technology 6569 (PAL-B)
MOS Technology 6572 (PAL-N)
MOS Technology 6573 (PAL-M)
MOS Technology 8565 HMOS-II version for "C64E" motherboards
MOS Technology 8566 VIC-II E (PAL-B) C128 version
MOS Technology 8569 VIC-II E (PAL-N) C128 version

In lazy speak: Old VIC = old luminances, New VIC = new luminances.
Only early bread bins where Old VIC, most where New VIC. |
