A 1541 disk drive and an x1541 cable is what I use, but you could use a 1581 as well. E-Bay sells 1541's for very little.

As I write this, there's a 1541 AND cable on E-Bay (in Australia) for .73 cents. :)

You can use a 1581 or 1541 but both use different disk types. A 1541 uses 5.25" floppies which aren't easy to find, while a 1581 uses standard 3 1/2" diskettes. So if you have old disks disking about, I'd go for the 1541. If you want to STORE data, I'd go for the 1581. The 1581 also holds much more information that the 1541.

North American computers and hardware run on 120 volts/60 Hertz while European computers run on 220 volts/50 Hertz. So don't go buying a North American drive :)

Actually, if the drive has an external power supply (a few do) you CAN buy a North American drive so long as you have the correct power supply. If you have one of those little "traveler's adapters" that convert power and plugs, you may also be able to use one of those.

The 1581 is quite hard to get hold of, does anyone know where to get them from. I've tried ebay to no avail

What are you trying to do?

Do you want to play these games on a 64 that are downloaded from your PC (via internet download)?

You could always go for the PC emulator which supports both NTSC (North America) and PAL (Euro) machines and forget about an actual 64.

Or run to http://www.fairlight.to/tools/pc.html

And look at the 1541 EMU which allows you to use your PC as a virtual 1541, which is probably what you'd like to do if you have a real 64.

Hold it, in most cases you can't use modern 3.5" HD disks in a 1581! May work fine with some drive mechanics, but in the majority of cases you'll run into trouble. 1581 is meant to use the old 3.5 DD disks, which are equally hard to come by as SD/DD 5.25" disks these days. 1581 are sold on ebay from time to time, I'd say about 1-3 a month. Put them into your favourites search and get notified once one pops up. They go for about 60-100 Euros a piece.

But apart from that you can use virtually any drive for transferring data to/from your PC: 1541, 1541-II, 1541-C, 1571, they all work fine with an XE/XM/XA cable.

A related question: Do those clones (Oceanic, etc...) work with the Star Commander as well?
