How to make crazy-comet slides in Goattracker
Hi all,
Anyone know of a easy way to make a effect of the popular Rob Hubbard "crazy comet" sliding sfx in a instrument or with pattern commands?
I'm also wondering if there is anyone that have a nice Goattracker way of making the modular effects used in Jeroen Tel's Cybernoid 2 title song?
Maybe there exists some GT sng file convertions of these two songs?

Regarding Hubbard's Crazy Comet slide effect... i.e. a simple appreggio when one part of it is sliding up or down?
In GoatTracker there isn't an actual facility to do this effect, but it is possible to cheat, although it may not be 100% accurate...
In the wavetable, put this in:
01: 41 : 00
02: 00 : 80
03: ff : 01
Set up your instrument to point at this starting wavetable pos.
Then in the speed-table you need a set of portamento/slide values where each entry is larger in value, e.g:
01: 00 : 10
02: 00 : 20
03: 00 : 40
04: 00 : 80
05: 00 : c0
06: 01 : 00
07: 02 : 00
etc.. the values vary depending how powerful you want the slide to work.
Then when you write your notes, do...
A-5 01 F04
--- -- 201
--- -- 202
--- -- 203
--- -- 204
--- -- 205
--- -- 206
--- -- 207
..etc..
This is an example for sliding down, sliding up you just replace the 200's with 100's.
A couple of disadvantages:
1.) If played as slower durations, you'll notice how ineffective it is compared to Hubbard's natural way. That's why I used a fast duration in this example. You should be able to get away with it at standard durations, like $06, though.
2.) The speed-table will use up a lot of entries depending how much of this effect you want in your tunes.
Other than that, it gives pretty much the same effect, at least I think so anyway. I used this in a couple of my tunes, e.g. "Trouble" (Attitude #10 diskmag).
As for the effect in Jeroen Tel's Cybernoid two, just play around with square waves and the sync bit. :) Two voices required of course. |

If you got a player that has the ability to do the Hubbard slide in a decent way, you can make some pretty neat things with it. Using slide or Vibrato.... Also try it out in multispeed (4x or so). :-) |

It's kind of a partial arpeggio slide. The base note of the arp stays fixed while the rest of the notes in the arp go down. Makes that spooky sound at 0:10. |

If the tempo is fast enough you can aswell achieve the effect by just hacking in the notes manually into the pattern editor, probably in combination with 3XX if you´re using hardrestart.
c-3
b-2
c-3
a#2
c-3
a-2
c-3
g#2
etc ...
If wavetable space isn´t an issue consider creating the effect directly in the wavetable and call it via 8XX in the pattern editor when needed.

@Stainless:
If you have an arpeggio changing between note X and note Y, but ONLY apply slide to note Y. So every second time you have the slide and the other second time you have the stable note. I hope that makes a bit sense. :-) |

It makes sense.
I figure i hit the arp note from lets say c#3 and then just tell SDI to slide to c#1
(tie note and 3x command i presume) and depending on the speed of the slide
and the range of the start and end notes it alternates from the base note to the
current slide note hence the wierd fx.
Combine it with some sync and ringmod it, perhaps sprinkle it with some filter ?
I think i might have done that by accident before but didn't realize what the correct term for the effect was.
Thanks for the lecture :-D (honestly, this is the kind of shit you don't find in google) |

This is, in fact, THE way to do Hubbard appreggio slides... thanks man! |

It takes 4 bytes in JCH.
Since I don't know GT well enough, does this mean you can't make instruments with fixed frq - meaning they are always subject to note and transpose? Or is it just that you can only set it to fixed frq on instrument level and not do it directly in the wave+frq table?
Funnily enough, I didn't know the effect itself was called a Hubbard-slide until I used it in an early worktune for EoD and Twoflower identified it as such. (I just wanted some weird intro fx) |
