commerical demos ?
I notice some are uploaded.. e.g. if muso's / coders wanted to show their skills to a software houses..
I'm sure loads of people did them, e.g. the hubbard music demos... and a more recent one "arcanum software development"
shouldn't their be a new catagory.. since if you post coders who did games, u'll get ppl moaning "oh they aren't sceners" and the other people going "oh a demo, but with no credits" ?
tricky one...

Personally I feel that such demos weren't done for the scene, hence: those who did them aren't sceners. Problem solved :) |

often those demos were released to the scene though (like rob hubbards) ... so uhm, yes, tricky. |

There are also some non-commercial people who did demos who didn't call themselves sceners :)
Anyway, if it's a demo, it should be here. |

Besides all of that, we're talking about a handful of commercial releases.
IMO that's not something to worry about so let them stay in the Db. |

Alternatively we could put an intro on them, and say that they are "bug fixed" or maybe even "cracked"? \o/ |

I second Graham.
A demo like 'It's Real Magic' - is commercial too, but a true scene release. |

That's different, ABS was always a scener. I doubt if the ones who did the Arcanum one even considered themselves sceners. And to follow up on what Graham said: if somebody who is not a scener creates, for example, a picture, I don't think that that picture is a scene-release and the person becomes a scener. Not everybody who used the c64 in a non-professional way is automatically a scener!
The rate this is going, soon literally everybody who has ever touched a c64 will be in the database ;)

I'd rather see the demos, and the credits regardless if they are "supposid" sceners.. and no they actually coded/drew/composed something (as u can see), so the comment about anyone who touched a 64 is a bit, well over the top and out of proportion.
for me they produced something, they should be credited. theres not that many demos that fall into this catagory as said before, but it even extends to i dunno fonts ripped from games etc. again "not sceners" where does it end?
they deserve a credit.

I have no problems with people getting the credits for stuff they did, but I just don't feel that it should automatically credit them as 'sceners' and that's what happens here. Meaning you get 3 pros in the top 5 musicians chart. And yes, sure, they've probably done some compunet stuff in their time but why aren't they in the charts under the handles they used back then? Because everybody knows them as pros and votes for them because of their pro work.
There have been suggestions to somehow split the credits in real credits and those ripped/taken from somewhere else (like games), maybe that should be considered again. With pros being creditted but also being non-votable. |
