Playstation Devs

As there seems to be a few of us here, though I would ask. Did anybody ever use a SONY NEWS? They kind of fascinate me, and I wonder what dev would have been like if we used them as originally intended.

“SONY NEWS”? What’s that? Google oddly doesn’t help me, it just tries to tell me that PS5 is coming :’)

Interesting. I was not aware that it was used for PSX development (not a surprise either). Got any links to share?
I only recognize Sony's NEWS from many SNES development manuals. I have never seen a copy of NEWS either, or the SNES dev tools for it (i'd love a copy of all btw!) :)

i worked on ps1 and ps2 stuff in the company and also never heard about this. our devkits were regular PCs, the only thing that came from sony was their terrible CD burner setup. the ps2 kit had some "ps2 in a pc case" thing iirc.

The story goes, it was to be NEWS, but people didn't like the idea, as custom SONY computer comes at a custom SONY computer price + import from Japan. Sony saw SN Systems at some event (e3 probably) liked what they did and then decided to buy SN systems and use their tech. Which meant we could all use normal PCs - YAY. However I was thinking that the earliest devkits probably still used NEWS as that is what Sony dev'd on and had the same CPU, so would have probably been more advanced at the time than SN's offerings. But maybe such systems never made it out of Japan, there was a large launch gap between Japan and US.

Destruction Derby was Psygnosis right? which had Psy-Q aka SN Systems internally right?

Seeing as the PSX is an evolution of the SNES-CD, seeing it in the SNES docs and then Sony carrying on to use it at the start of the PSX dev, makes sense..

PS2 devkits have a I think it was a 233MMX might have been a 200MMX,might have even changed between revisions, PC running I think it was Red-hat.

even the pre1.0 ps1 kit came with psy-q... so they must have switched to that VERY early in the process

Plain text version of my previous post: Since when did PS development have anything whatsoever to do with CSDb?
