Best copy program to tranfer from 1541 to Ultimate II+
I want to copy some disks from a 1541 to a D64 on an Ultimate II+. I tried this some years ago with my SX64 but it seemed the copier used did not handle CRC checks and retries very well. After byte comparing multiple copies of the same disks there were differences and some programs did crash after running them from the Ultimate.
The 1541 in the current setup has a parallel cable installed. But serial transfer will do fine too. It's not about the speed, but having gooed copies is more important here. The disks are standard formatted, no originals with copy protections.
What copy program(s) would you suggest? |

I use the basic Action Replay copier and Fast Hack'em with good results. |

Maverick Single 1541 data copier. Don't use the Dual copier, as it won't verify the sector parity on the source disk and can't inform you of any read errors. |

I just tried this four times (Maverick Single Data Copier).
1541 (device 8) to SD card on Ultimate II+ (device 9).
Took 1 min 55 sec. to copy the disk(side).
Byte comparing files 1 and 4 were exactly equal.
Files 2 and 3 both had a complete sector of zeros. And on a different place.
I don't understand why this is so unreliable.
Maverick did not show any read or write problems. |

I managed to copy a few protected programs only to g64, using Turbo Nibbler 4.
Sometimes such g64 would not work on U2+, but it worked in Vice.
Then I repeated copying from g64 to g64 in Vice. Also Turbo Nibbler 4 or Burstnibbler1.9 (parallel and extra ram emulation)
Then I got a copy g64 that worked both in U2+ and in Vice. |

Today the easiest way to transfer normal unprotected disks is just to buy a cheap IECHost and run your 1541 via USB. Good overview and as many rereads as you want of bad tracks. I wouldn't ass myself to transfer via C64 (with the exception of WarpCopy). |

It's just like 30 to 40 disks or so. Just want to check if everything has been preserved and upload the ones that are not yet.
I tried several different programs today. Action Replay 6 (the one built in the Ultimate II), Double-FCopy-A: Double-FCopy-A which is a Fast Hack'em ripoff, Turbo Nibbler 4. All have the same problems, when I copy the disk 3 or 4 times, there are differences, mostly a complete track filled with 00's somewhere in the file. While the Fast Hack'em ripoff uses verify and reports no errors on source- and no errors on destination drives. |

For "normal" unprotected disks, make sure its a "slow" and a "not nibbler" program. The nibblers will happily copy any sort of error they enounter (thats the whole point) and "fast" copiers often don't verify at all, or very poorly (like AR copier).
I'd try something like good old turbocopy. Also i thought U2 actually has a copier built into the file browser? |

If this is happening with everything, I don't think the problem is the copier, it's something else.
Are you using non-standard drive ROMs? Do you have more than the 2 drives on the IEC bus? |

The current setup is a 1541 with Speeddos Plus as drive 8 and the Ultimate II+ as drive 9.
Same happens with a standard SX-64 with builtin drive and again the Ultimate II+ as drive 9.
Maybe it is the Ultimate II+ that is the problem? |

Does UII+ emulate a parcable as well?
I'd definately try something like Beastie Copy V1 - 2 Parallel Drives for the kicks then :)
Got an old U1541-I with network port still. Never found an even working copier for such setups. Warpcopy IMHO has about the most secure reader for unprotected stuff - Easyflash USB transfer with ef3utils works nicely as well.
Apart - proper copying and generating an image on e.g. sd2iec seems to be beyond many even specialised tools still as well? With SOME fast IEC routs would be nice to see. |
