Crossdevelopment tools
I have built a set of tools for crossdevelopment (PC->C64/128), and I need beta testers to try them out and suggest features. (And help to write the dox!) There's a sprite editor and animation studio, a MCBM Editor, and a cross-assembler with a syntax-highlighting IDE. All the tools load, edit, and save, and there are a lot of cool features already in, but I need some feedback, and here at csdb seem to be the sort of people who might enjoy tools like these, so check 'em out and let me know what you think, eh!

At least the link to the cross-assembler just gives me a ?file not found error.

yes, the cross-assembler link is wrong.
but anyway, the first impression of the "koala-painter" was quite good. it seems to work a little bit slow, and if i use the pencil and want to set a single dot, sometimes the dot is not set. but this tool seems to have the potential to become a very useful x-dev-tool, especially if the to-do-list is fully implemented.
what about an "import"-function for importing windows-bitmap-graphics (in 160x200 resolution), which are converted to koala? :-)
the sprite-editor looks quite good as well, although i haven't checked all function by now.

Yeah, it's actually converting everything to koala in realtime. Even when you draw a circle or box, it's rendering the preview of it to the virtual koala pic. That way you can even see what you're about to do to the colors and all.
As for import, that's coming. Color conversion will probably give me some headaches. Also, I need to allow for the different palettes on people's machines.
The sprite editor is the most finished. I'm going back in today to finish adding features to the animation studio.
(Thanks for the heads-up about the cross-assembler, btw... I'll fix that now)

Uh, yes, the paint program manages to emulate the speed of Koalapainter fine :)
I hope some optimization is planned for the future. :) The conversion process shouldn't be that slow on 400+ MHz machines?! |

Cool with a c64-paint program on the C64.
I know this is still beta but i'll just mention some ideas anyway (just tried it fast - i can come up with 256 more if you want):
PAINTER6
--------
UNDO:
-where is redo? It is necessary! (just push it onto another stack) You should map CTRL+Z to the undo function.
ZOOM:
- tools don't work under zoom!
- (i don't know how to exit zoom)
- scrolling in zoom mode / different zoom levels
GENERAL:
it would be nice if you could choose an option, where (when selected) the editor would GUESS BY ITSELF if it's gonna use mcol1/mcol2/charcol.
IMPORTANT: since koala (and thus your editor) is so sesitive to 4 cols pr. 8x8 square, there should be an option to see where those 8x8 squares are.
PAL-emulation: prolly hard2do, but it would be nice to see how a pic would look on a C64.
and yeah it's a little slow.
SPRED:
======
You say the editor itself is finished? I think before you can call it finished, it should be possible to see a non-zoomed version of the sprite, while drawing it.
Anyway, this was just some ideas - hope you'll produce the fucking best gfx-editors ever! |

...replace "on the C64" with "on the PC" in the 1st line... |

It most definately is. These tools are first versions only.
There are much better ways to do everything I've done in the painter. The lack of speed reflects a lack of time spent optimizing. My intent was to be able to see what effect drawing would have on the colors when making a line, box, or circle. Thus, it renders back and forth to koala every frame, which is really time consuming. There's a better way to do this, but I have been focusing on other features. The box I develop on is a 2Ghz P4, so the speed has been less of an issue. Hopefully one of the things that will come from releasing these initial versions of the tools will be that I will get a better idea of what systems people are using on average, and find where I need to make changes for usability and speed.
I'm especially pleased that you have taken the time to check these tools out because I have a great deal of respect for your work in this field.

Sorry about the doubling. That'll teach me to click refresh. Anyway, that previous message was for cadaver.
CyberBrain: ESC gets you out of zoom, and I will work an unzoomed display into spred. |

when i use the pencil in normal-mode, a mouseclick does _not_ set a pixel. i hav to move the mouse a little bit while pressing the mousebutton down, then the pixel is set.
in zoom-mode, however, the pixel is immediately set, when i click the mouse-button.
can you fix that, that in normal-mode a pixel is also set, when i click the mouse-button even if i don't move the mouse?
and, yes, a 8x8 grid (or 4x8 grid for multicolor) is quite useful.
:-)
this tool could be really cool and useful, if it's finished!
