HVSC website relaunch
Hi folks,
we're planning to do a complete relaunch of the HVSC website. As we're doing it for you, the SID fans, we'd like to have some feedback what you think the new website might look like. Tell us about all the shortcomings and flaws the current site has and also new features you'd like to see added to it.
So far a first brainstorming has turned up the following ideas:
o we'd like to create something like a unified SID portal, incorporating some sites under one roof, for example one could think of the SID search, the SID Hunt, the STIL, the composers website. Any more you can think of that would fit in that line?
o All the lists will be database driven, so they can be conveniently browsed online again (as opposed to the zipped excel sheets we got at the moment). This includes the Ripped Tunes List (which is useful for external contributors to avoid double work), the RSID todo list, the PSID64 buglist (there are still a few SIDs that don't behave as they should on a real C64 environment). All these lists will be able to be searched by title/composer/ripper/etc..., you can set filters, sort them every way you like.
o Some tutorials on how to rip SIDs and how to compose SIDs will be there as well. So far one has to search for that info like the needle in the pile of hay (or whatever that saying is in english, I think you get the drift).
o The complete HVSC will be browsable and PLAYABLE online (via sidplug, so far the only alternative, even though the soundquality is pretty outdated compared to Sidplay2 these days). One could even think about easy playlist generation with the option to save it to the harddisk later.
o Finally, of course the current labyrinth of links and subsites will be cleaned up and simplified, so the site gets easier and more intuitive to browse. We'll add a little graphical design as well, but won't bloat it with too much graphics. W3C standards will be maintained despite that! ;-)
o (Your requested feature here)
To quote Sander, who will do the design of the new website:
THINK BIG! ;-) |

For the record, sid2midi works a charm on polyphonic phones :) |

Hm, I don't know if a website would be an appropriate means of converting sidtunes to wav or mp3. I think it's easily enough done with the "save as" option in Sidplay2/w or Sidplay1. The next step, the conversion to mp3 can be done with tools like Razorlame/LAME or any other mp3 encoder of choice.
But anyway, a little tutorial on how to do it properly would be a nice addition for the site. |

menace, but it does only do good things to tunes without static sounds (i.e. drums/percussions). pacrunner is one the few gametunes that come to my mind, which really work well in combination with sid2midi without having to do any further touches to the output. |

Yeah, I can imagine sync or ring modulation can be quite hard to do through midi... ;-) |

Steppe: Why mp3, when ogg vorbis exists? :)
dalezy: True, it kills all bassy sounds. But a lot of tunes remain very listenable. Only this weekend I was sitting at Norvegia 03 (or rather by the campfire outside the party), drinking beer and listening to sidsongs on Arcane/Haujobb's phone. We took requests, and downloaded from the complete hvsc mirror at Arcane's home server :) |

Blasphemy! We must never emulate nor speak of emulated things on a forum for C64-scene activities! *rollseyes* |

Dane is right. This debate turned to silly retro talk. If you guys really need to go so far go to lemon64.com/forum and talk about saving out SID music from Sidplay/w and making MP3 of it there. Such debates like this get on my nerves. |

Ok, let's stick to the subject!

The approach is to have a SID portal, and personally i think it's best to not only meet the demands of the average scener who likes SID music, but also make it accessible for the nonscener who is interested in SID music.

The online SID player would be great, accompanied by favourite lists of famous composers or anyone interesting. (a personal 'bookmarked' list would be great aswell ofcourse :)
Steppe already mentioned quite a few possible features above and i like the idea of having GSM-compatible tunes available on the site aswell.

Some goals:
-To have a good resource site for the SID.
Which means online browsing & playing. (STIL, composers' profiles, all tunes etc)

-To get people contribute SID music.
Programs like Goat-tracker, easy accessible for nonsceners, guided by a tutorial etc is what i'm thinking of. Any help on this would be great :)

The biggest problem is marketing the SID as a product/tool, and making it consumable for the non-scener. Therefore it might help to discard your knowlegde about the C64, and look through the eyes of John Doe instead while thinking of features.
Ofcourse any feature that would please the SID-expert is welcome aswell :) |
