csdb account notifications / closures
I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I have to say, it makes no sense to close inactive accounts. C64 scene, where we are all old with kids and other stuff. and it's too much trouble to keep a small amount of metadata active in the database. strange one.

if its too much trouble to log in once every 6 months.... strange one. Hearing it from someone with exactly zero contributions to the DB ... even more strange one. |

Well, apologies - I use the forum occasionally - and I guess I don't log in often enough but it's not impossible that someone might be unavailable for a period of time.
I'm not a contributor true - and I appreciate the resource. I just don't understand the point of deleting users. I haven't deleted your exotica account for being inactive for example groepaz! :) (and your last login looks like it was 2010) |

It's too much hassle to go through ssl tunnels and use w3m so that I can log in from a reasonably "safer" location then those networks I have access 97% of the year. This was a reason I got a closure warning one time as well.
So any plans to roll out https soon? Even self signed certificate would be an improvement over no encryption at all. Is this a hosting limitation?

there is the difference between scene board and a random wiki =P
as for not understanding why deleting inactive users - _I_ dont understand why someone who uses csdb once every year needs an account at all. expiring accounts is also a common practise on forums (and even more so, BBSs), and for good reasons. considering the age of the server csdb is running on, i'd even say that purging old accounts will speed up the login process by keeping the userlog small :o)

For someone who is so clever and talented, you seem to be struggling here!
I don't think it is common practice either. No other forums I am on expire accounts (it is not 1990 and this isnt a dialup bbs). there should be no overhead with a properly designed and indexed database (unless you are talking a different of hundreds of thousands/millions of rows perhaps).
but ok. i get it. you don't agree. fine.

the only posts you made since your reactivation are those in this very thread. i can only assume that it means that this was what you needed your account for. |

you asked why someone who visits not so often needed an account. I needed an account to write on the forum at some point - although it may have not been the sole reason I registered (far too long ago to remember). I wasn't referring at all to this thread.
