@Tdj I hgad another listen to J.Tel track on my other PC (which has better speakers). The track is interesting. If i were to break it up, the keyboard sounds i really quite liked, they reminded me of sounds used in films from the 70's/80's i was thinking of Escape from New York, that use similar sounds. The drums were ok, slighly bland. I'm still not sure about J.Tel's sing, i could picture more depressed person singing the lyrics, as J.Tel did not come across as heavy enough. The female singer sounded good. I thought the track was about 1 minute too long. It starts off good, J.Tel sings and then the female sings and then T.Jel appears again and then the track drags on for another unnecessary minute. So overal the tracks has some very good points.

Quote: The first version of this demo had me rapping but the sound quality was too low .. or at least that is what Jeroen claims, I still think he wanted to replace me because he knows the rappers get all the pussy ;-)

Electronic music and slighly bland singing can work. The slight rap sound without the full on rap was reminding me of the Pet Shop Boys and their track West End Girls. When i first heard West End Girls i was thinking, oh, that sounds like upper class rapping, alomost talking with a hint of rhyme and T.Jel is doing that alittle on his track.

When I was still working on this track (circa 1999) I was in touch with one of the best Dutch rappers to do the verse, but he wanted to write his own lyrics instead so that fell through. Then later on I found another group, and this time it was me who proposed to have them change the lyrics.

Nowadays, I would probably opt to drop the rap completely.

mc has to write the lyrics he's delivering himself, that's one of the few unbreakable rules.

Heh. Do you really want to play that game? Ever heard of the term 'ghostwriters'?

A few years ago I was an active member of the Dutch hiphop underground, famous for my lyrics (not so famous for my rapping), even amongst those who are now appearing on my television screen (for the Dutch: I killed Baas B. in a textcee compo! Okay, not so hard but still ..). And I've had this discussion there many times. Most people there agree with you, but I don't. I feel, sure, an mc can do his own lyrics, unless he sucks at writing them. Then personally I prefer it if somebody else does his. But in that world it's a big no-no, well, at least they act like it is. Unbreakable rule my half-Surinam ass ;)
