future of the SID?

It's always amazing to see, how SID music changed in the last 23 years.
It seem that the SID doesn't has any limits...
What will be possible in the next years?

I predict a nuskool of sounds coming out of the SID, just look at the difference already from a 80s tune and one from the 90s ... there is still a lot to be done on the SID, and like someone said here, it really depends on the individual controlling it. I see a whole new generation coming...

it's the music also, not only the synth behind it. Maybe the C64 will go through a IDM kind of phase ? We need more noise and not so many lead melodies.

Look what happened to the electric guitar... it's the first step, abandon the solos !

The SID started out doing mostly classical covers, then guys like Hubbard and Galway reformed it to fit their own needs.

What's we've seen from 1987 and on, is that the composers have managed to make their own distinctive styles using those 3 SID channels.

A lot of the contemporary pop music has also been done on the SID, and the newer composers twist that into their own different styles.

The SID tunes that get the most out of it, are those made by sceners who wrote their own players. I don't think that
will change. There is still no magic "do it all" musicprogram for SID.

I think we still have a lot to discover with the SID!!

Well, I think GT2 implies alot of the magic you mentioned and one can modify the player - if being skilled enough - easily due to the open source code. Just look at the last GT2 compo. I guess in the current SC5 compo most tunes, but the ones from those usual suspicious, will be done with GT2.

Still.. Goat is limited by the tracker itself.. If you wan't to go all new directions in player design you're still stuck with the editor being as it is.. You could in fact do the same with the JCH editor if you're up for that, but then you'd be limited by the sequence system of that one and so on and so forth!.. Not that I agree with Rambones' point, that the best composers (on the sid.. ) or those that get the most out of it are the player-coders themselves. That's a bit narrow minded imho (no offence, Jan), but coding the playeres obviously gives a lot more freedom to actually realize technical ideas. But then again this can be done with a "good coder friend" too, right? :) ... Ah, well.. Just my thoughts..

And anyway... Will Laxity enter the SID Compo V to save the day?? Or does future of the SID depend on just returning A-man entering the SID COMPO V? And how about composers starting on D.? The future is ambiguous...

;-)
