A wonderful tune

One of David Whittakers finest tunes is song 1 in the sid "Loopz" from 1991. I wish more sidcomposers out there could make that kind of music. Brings out the best of the sidchip.
Not so advanced sounds, but fucking perfect to the melody. Not so hysterical like modern composer make.

Why do not so advanced sounds bring out the best of the chip?

Maybe I'm too much of a tech-geek to understand such a phrase, but too me; it would be only logical that advanced sounds would use the chip in a better way.

But I guess you meant it like an acoustic version of an overproduced pop-song that brings back the composition to it's core? I'm not feeling that metaphor for SID, but that may be just personal though.

There is no best.
There is only complex or non complex.
Non complex does simple clean sounds.

The reason simple clean sounds can be perceived as better, is because of your nostalgia feeling, those tunes rocked, and they still do!

The reason you perceive advanced sounds as not clean/overproduced, is because you nomatter what, like simple stuff most.

Its not about what is best.

Its about what YOU like.

I've been recently trying to make tunes like this with a real oldskool touch and even more just with one waveform but I've noticed that it really demands something outstanding to make it sound even worth publishing...
Many tracks I've started but none of them is yet close to ready. What comes to this mentioned tune, I don't find anything so spectacular in this one. David has done lots of better ones like Lazy Jones & Armageddon Man just to mention few.

I wasn't aware of that but it's a nice SID, indeed! As for simple style, slow epic flow, depth, minimalism, chord building and one guitar (one piano) style, Martin Galway's Times of Lore and George Fell's Stataionary Ark comes to my mind, if you like Loopz you'll like these, too.

David liked to experiment with that in previous tunes I assume. One of my personal favs from him is a simple SID like that from Max Headroom, same way minimalist as inspiring. It was among the top of the list SIDs when I started to plan the tracks for my SID remix album 'rakBIT' in 2009.

The best for producing something like that would be to go back to the basics: grab an acoustic guitar and build a chord progression that sounds great and recognisable by itself and spice it up with the least possible details to keep the pureness.

Booker is right: you have pretty much everything to produce such tracks ;) Okay it is a pretty different fun tune but e.g. in MOS8580 you showed a pretty fine skill for linking chord progressions.

Definitely not my cup of tea... I have really difficulties discovering the wonderfulness in this tune... But I guess taste differs... Armageddon Man is a way better tune imo... And Panther of course!

Not so advanced sounds, but fucking perfect to the melody.
I'm glad you can fuck perfect to the melody. I prefer R. Kelly for that. Or "The Velvet Rope" by Janet Jackson. Some good fucking tunes on there.

Hm, to me Whittaker's late 64 tunes are all rubbish. afaik he went Amiga, so I guess he concentrated on that machine and just made quick conversion jobs on the 64, e.g. Exterminator (straight from the arcade?) or Beverly Hills Cop (what a lame 'Axel F fail... and that in 1989).

His best times were 86/87: Defcom, Cosmonut, Slaine, Red Max, Enduro Racer (esp. in-game tune) and, as mentioned, The Armageddon Man and Panther. Just brilliant tunes to listen in endless loops.

edit: just listening to Loopz (!), surely one of his better ones of the "new" tunes
