Release id #61617 : Dialogue (Wally's Tetris Poem)

Maybe somebody can shed some light on this: this tune was part of a demo, was never released as a seperate entity. Now, for somebody (Stainless Steel) to make a .prg out of it, then to add it as a new entry to this database kinda strikes me as being wrong. Has this ever been discussed before?

Hmm...Déjà vu indeed!

In short, creating "rips"/releases using HVSC is not the way to go.

if what you say is true then well, stainless steel should be credited for releasing it, and the releasedate should be today, not 2004 =P

but i share your feeling about it, its similar to ripping the title pic from a game, adding a viewer to it (worse, using an existing viewer in this case) and then adding it as a release.

i am almost convinced that this isnt a valid release in the context of csdb.

Oh holy fucking shit, what have i done.

Listen, if my uploading prg's of my favourite tunes (so i can finally make a comment on them and vote specifically for the tune) is going to turn into another one of those csdb dramas, then just delete them and let it rest.

good idea :)

and why not simply write your comment into the entry of the demo it's in? (or alternativly, convince perff that implementing comments on sids is a good idea?)

Ok, i might be overreacting a little.

But topics like these do have the habit of turning into drama scenes and name calling around here every once in a while.

And end world hunger. And heal cancer. And ..

What magical powers does it take to accomplish that task in a mere humans lifetime ? (pun intended)

As i said, i want to comment specifically on the tune and also vote for the _tune_ not for the demo.

It seemed like a reasonable option, since the "executable" fetish is all the rage here.

Here comes the drama.

Please, don't make this a moderator thing again. I meant the entire csdb community.

Happens not often, but here I agree with TDJ. If I didn't release it seperately or if it's not released in a demo/mag or whatever, then it shouldn't be added to CSDb. I've sent some of my sids directly to Steppe (i.e. Boing) to be added to HVSC, mainly because those aren't my favourite. If I wanted to release it, I would have done it.

Well hein, i did not mean to offend you by uploading those entries.
I merely wanted to express my appreciation for some tunes i really like.

No problem, I'm glad you like the music, but making seperate prg files is a bit too much.

What if all of us did the same with the tunes we like?

Before TDJ picked the topic up, I was about to post something suggesting that everyone should do just that.
I personally think it is a great idea that the sid's should get a bit more attention in the csdb context.

For me, the sids having a dedicated entry was a logical consequence. I know many disagree. But that's my opinion.

To those who might think :

"But then why not have a separate entry for every effect and font and each scener's dick length and my daddy's shoe size"

People please, stay reasonable.

if you like a tune, i suggest doing like we did back in the days - use it in your demo/intro/whatever :)

Sending a PM to the composer, if he's registered here, is a nice way of showing appreciation as well.

Well, let me think.

Why would i make a demo and use someone else's music, instead of my own music.

I could do a remix/cover sure, but thats not the point.

I can see where you are going, in any other case your reasoning would apply.
But for a musician to use someone else's music is like a coder not coding his own demo.

i can see your point, and at the same time i dont agree :) many coders frequently use code from others (for example, loaders).

the lameness starts when you pretend to have made it yourself.

My point is, I'm a musician myself
(at least i like to think that, others may disagree).

I really don't see the point of making a demo for anyone else's music than for my own (and no, making a psid exe out of a tune doesn't count as a demo).

If i was to make a remix/cover of my favorite tunes (not unlikely to happen) yeah sure.

But i don't see any point in cramming some popular sid's (in their original version) into a disk menu just for the sake of the csdb rules and regulations.

Ok, my coder example wasn't the best. But i think you get my point.

Isn't it ironic that the very same guy you are so fond of, Hein, has actually released several demos with music by others last year?

Now my guess would be that he did that for the exact same reason you describe: that he loves those tunes ;)

Thats all fine and dandy, but totally not the point.

My original intent was to finally be able to make comments and votes on my favorite tunes.

Also, I don't think it's a good idea to 'abuse' the system here just because it doesn't fit your needs. Granted, the current system isn't perfect, but if everybody just did stuff like that, it would become even worse ..

Woo hoo, strong words. Chill out dude.

Nobody's "abusing" the system here.

Im merely "using" the system. If I kept on uploading those psid files and the mods
had stepped in, then you might have had a point. Otherwise, you're just exaggerating.

Besides, sometimes thinking a bit "outside of the box" and bending the rules can lead to great results,
rather than playing it safe and by the book.

Jesus Christ, you really are a piece of work, ain't ya?

I deliberately used quotation marks so it would be obvious it wasn't meant that strong. But I guess you're one of those people that you have to be very very careful with, or they'll feel insulted :Z

As for "bending the rules": this is not a game, this is a database, and in order to keep it usable for most people we should follow the rules that are set, like with every other repository. If something doesn't fit, either take it up with the Perff, or create something yourself.
