Event id #1577 : DATASTORM 2010
UP ROUGH SOUNDSYSTEM, GENESIS PROJECT and DIVINE STYLERS invites you to DATASTORM 2010!
The demo party for oldskool platforms. Only.
PREFACE
Sweden has since 1998 been blessed with the world's greatest summer party, Little Computer People, delivering
hot data action for the oldskool crowd year after year. While we are grateful to the Hack'n'Trade posse for
having us boozing, computing, and socializing each year, we curse them for the hardcore one year data-abstinence
they inflict upon us inbetween each party...
Since we obviously can't get rid of the addiction, we have now decided to accept it and even take it to the next
level by doubling the dose! The winter-time withdrawal syndromes has finally come to an end for all you oldskool
fanatics: The absolute swedish elite has gathered to bring you the best fucking fix of Amiga/C64/Console axxion ever!
THE DEAL
Up Rough Soundsystem, Genesis Project & Divine Stylers hereby invite you to DATASTORM 2010! The ultimate winter party for people operating on machines with SOUL. It's going down on the the 5:th of February 2010 and keeps going until the 7:th of February 2010! Can you dig it?
Partylocation is the city of Gothenburg at the swedish westcoast - the stronghold of the swedish amigascene.
The city is easy to reach through two international airports, ferry and train.
The entrance fee is set to 200 SEK (~20E), with dinner included on Saturday and breakfast included on
Saturday and Sunday. Only swedish currency accepted.
PARTYPLACE
You know that when we do stuff, we do it right, and this time we have put in extra effort to make that dreary
weekend in February something special. The party will be hosted at a night club in an industrial complex, close to
the centre of Gothenburg, providing that special mix of roughness and cozyness that we all love. In addition to the tables on which to put your real hardware on, although we allow laptops for cross-dev purposes, we have lounge areas with cozy sofas and arm chairs where you can comfortably sit around and talk about that new
cruncherroutine you've been working on for the last decade or whatever...
FEATURES
Having the party at a nightclub is something special. The greatest difference from other small parties is that
DATASTORM will feature a proper bar with service-minded personnel that works as long as people are awake and will
serve thirsty party freax with an endless supply of beer, wine, and softdrinks. But a party is not just about
drinking right? We also hired some cooks that will deliver vegetarian and non-vegeterarian breakfast, dinner,
and supper on announced times. When the special meals are not served, barfood like pizza, hummousrolls, falafel
and kebab can be ordered as long as the bar is open. Everything to a price that even the scener on a budget
can afford! Ofcourse you can also buy snacks, candy and tobacco at all times. And the coffee is free, so you don't
fall asleep before your releases are finished in time for the competition!
Here is a list with all features of the party, more stuff might be added in the future so stay tuned!
* Bar open almost 24h with full assortment of cheap beer/wine/softdrinks.
* 2 Breakfasts and 1 Dinner included in entrance fee, vegeterian alternatives available.
* A variety of cheap barfood is available anytime.
* Snacks and tobacco available 24h.
* Superchill environment with cozy furniture.
* 6 clean toilets. No queues! Never pee your pants! Freedom!
* Powerful nightclub soundsystem!
* Cocktail data - we strive to get the perfect mix of socializing and computing!
SPECIAL GUESTS
* The grandfather of moduleswappers returns! Slash / Citron. is back! He will bring his customized
hippodecks to deliver the finest zak ever written in protracker. Bring your boathorns and your guns!
This is one show you don't wanna miss! Pull up selecta! Move Rudebwoy Move!
* More stuff is coming.. Stay tuned!
BATTLES
The mighty competition is being held at Saturday evening with the winners being presented after midnight..
For detailed info about the compos, head over to http://www.datastorm.se
Stay tuned for the announcement of compo-prizes!
The atmosphere when all competitors are present during the compo is unbeatable.
Therefore we do not allow remote entries which means that atleast one of the authors of an entry must be present
at the party. However, we do allow (and even encourage!) snail mail entries in the Packdisk Open contest,
see below for further details.
MORE INFO
Head over to http://www.datastorm.se and sign up for the party and find all the info you need, if you don't find it, ask in the forum!
You can also reach us via the official party Chat. |

@Sixx: Yes, it is a well needed "data vacation" for me. The Swedish "winter parties" (Floppy and S:t Lars) have always been an important inspiration to me to keep up with the LCP organizing throughout the years. It certainly took some extra effort to get myself to organize LCP when there were suddenly no "winter brother" to LCP organized anymore a few years ago. (That was sort of compensated by the fact that the Floppy guys and the S:t Lars guys joined forces with me for the BFP, S:t LCP and LCP 2009 parties though. :) Good to see yet another party pop up in this "slot" again, especially since it will most likely be a very good one, and yes, the probability of seeing me there is 99.8%. :)

The response is fucking massive so far. The Amiga response is way over my expectations, we could do with some more C64 boys though, so if you are thinking of going, don't hesitate, do sign up. The slots are being filled by the minute.
Frantic, we are happy to assist in bringing you a much needed vacation! ;)

-@-yonx-Its a real shame that you have to be present in order to enter the party compos, is this a trend with partys these days, coz if it is, then it limits the content of the party. Why cant these partys be open to all possible contributors??(and entrys) Whats wrong with getting a disk in the mail or an email of a file as an entry to the party.....????(theres still time 2 change this)
Good Luck with the party anyway I hope you get good numbers |

@tomz: while it might limit the total content we still feel that the quality of the party (for the attending crowd) is raised when all people contributing to the compos are attending the actual party, in terms of pre-compo gossip/mingle, the actual compo feeling and of course the prize ceremony.. so we will stick to that rule :)
too bad you can't make it to the party though :/ |

And if there's any trend to compo entries, it's that we get too damn many these days... LCP 2009 compo took what, six hours? |

Yup! Indeed. Remote entries are so not needed to fill a compo.
As a suggestion orga to orga you may wanna run the music compo during boozing prime time on the saturday. People will dance and generally have a good time and it take ages to finish.
Gfx compos are always very swift and could be run just before the demo compo if u like.

i think all music entries should be pressed on vinyl on friday evening and handed over to mister deejay for megablast party on saturday. if anyone can do it, it's up rough!
or maybe you could change the rules - only vinyl entries are accepted. this makes so much sense!!

Yeah, we staggered the deadlines to make it possible to start the gfx & music compos early:

i forgot to say that we have an extra rule applying only for goto80:s compotunes. they have to be submitted as 3-voice sheets to be reinterpreted by the gothenburg ukulele-trio in the compos

the response has been very massive to say the least, the site has been official for about 2 days and >2/3 of the seats are already reserved..
we saw the same thing happen at LCP2009 where the organizers nicely solved the problem by moving to a new partyplace.. unfortunately we don't have any backup plan, when all seats are reserved registration will be disabled. so don't hesitate to sign up if you want to be part of the axxion..

@yonx: after considering, this is a great idea! will there be a separate deadline for me, so the trio have time to rehearse? i assume you accept tracker-style notation sheets, ie papyrus-style mega print-outs? (traditional note sheet style is too lame for datastorm) |

I just think that this reservation thing is so "We-are-all-in-our-30s-and-want-to-be-certain-about-everything"-ish.
If the party is in a nightclub, it gotta be a limit on how many people is allowed inside. Gotta be 100`s? |

The night club does indeed take hundreds of people, but that's when:
* everyone is standing up
* the main room isn't filled with 40 tables and 100 computers.

@goto80: mega-printouts are of course accepted, do you think we are lamers?! it would be unfair to give you a separate deadline, but you can of course send your mega-printouts in advance to http://www.ukulelemannen.se to be sure that the replay is accurate enough. |

@yonx: thanks, I'll subscribe to the RSS, but I really think there should be a waiting list on the website for people that weren't able to reserve a seat yet.

Regarding old Narrow SCSI drives (50 pin), you can use converters from whatever scsi to 50 pin male as SCSI drives are backward compatible.
So if you like me have an endless supply of SCSI drives with SCA connecters, you can use a SCA->Narrow converter and voila, you got a 300GB wasteland in your Amiga.
Problem is that these converters usually arent cheap.

on the website you say that only swedish kroner is accepted in this bar...
so this will be something like 30 SEK for a beer ? holy cow! |

or 20 kr for the cheap brand, yes. However that was just what the price happened to be on a regular Saturday a month ago, and not necessarily what it'll be during Datastorm.

That would be Euro 3,5 less than I would have to pay for a 0,35 bottle of beer at a bar in Oslo, so to me this is a pay for one get two - and then some - deal. \o/ |

2 EUR for a beer at a bar in Sweden is cheap, even if it's a 0.33 l bottle. Normally you'd have to pay 3-4 EUR for one. |

Great party! Solid organizing! I will be back next year for sure!
Among the more notable merits of this party:
+ Good organization of the compo.
+ Nice to see a lot more Amiga people than I have ever managed to draw to any LCP party. This made it feel, not just like as "another nice party", but a party with distinct merits that other parties (Swedish at least) do not really provide.
+ Like Taper, I never had to leave the party because of the services you provided there. (..and the crew working in the bar were really nice.)
+ Good size of the party. Not too big (and not too small). Over the years, I have begun to appreciate parties of this size more than bigger ones.
+ I didn't have to organize it myself. ;)
If I was forced to complain on something it would be the sound volume which was quite unbearable at times. Maybe I am more sensitive than others (my ears still hurts), but I also heard 10+ others complaining on that, so it was not only me. Not saying this to be negative or anything (the party was truly great, as I said). Just some feedback. Jucke pointed out that the sound volume was lower when you were up in the DJ booth, where the sound controls where, than down in the hall (and I also noticed that later on). May be part of the explanation...
Anyway: See you at Datastorm 2011! |

THE GOOD
* The location was great, with a cozy bar and a nice roomy data area.
* The staff worked round the clock, superbly friendly, and they enjoyed having us there.
* The food was cheap, yummy and filling, and the bar was well stocked.
* The compo started almost on time, only about an hour delayed.
* We had an awesome projector, a good sound system, and a huge screen.
* The Hardcore demo and Megamix were great (just wished we'd done more).
* The visitors who as always partied well and delivered great releases!
THE BAD
* It was too cold in the main room on friday, and it was always cold next to the door. Some kind of heating arrangement is needed.
* The mixer board at the location was half-dead, next year we'll bring our own.
* There wasn't enough entertainment on the bigscreen. We had more planned, but were too busy to handle it.
* Two demos failed during the compo, we should have tested them properly before.
* One song was cut short and one demo played with fucked up music and had to be shown again.
* The voting system was built in a hurry and caused a lot of trouble.
THE UGLY
* There was no power 6 hours before the party started. When we opened the fuse box, there wasn't even anything to plug the fuses into. Coffe's cousin saved our asses with only hours to spare.
* Someone just had to get piss drunk, fell on people, knocked stuff over and was a nuisance. At least I don't think there was any permanent damage and his friends were nice and took care of him when it got out of hand.
THE GREETS
A huge thanks to my fellow organizers who all worked their asses off, the visitors who shared their love, the awesome staff, and Frantic who showed us how to do it. See you all next year, with more GOOD, less BAD, and no UGLY!

Frantic: the sound wasn't loud at all up in the booth, and I didn't think about it down by the compo machines. Perhaps the acoustics were worse over in your end of the room. We'll keep it mind for next year.

Excellent party! I must subscribe to a couple of the bad-points (mainly about temperature and not using the big screen for demoshowing outside of compo) - and definetly that one ugly-point. But the good-points outweigh them all. I am coming back, muthafrackers! |

Ok, i want to say only 1 bad thing, and its no surprise, and people make it EVERY time: the sound level was too loud. period.
turn to max
have a person placed in middle of room
turn down untill he says that its not on the pain level
then turn it further 10% down.
now it should be perfect :D
I dont think that i am particularly sensible, but i make music and so my ears are pretty tuned, and those levels just get on your nerves, and sometimes even specific frequencies actually create physical pain in the ears, then it IS too loud :D
if you want an extra organizer, who will make a plan for what and when to show demos and other stuff on screen, i offer myself.
when you didnt do as you had planned on this matter, it must be because you lacked a person to do it.
about anything else, i have only good memories! |

Thank you for a great party!
Like many others I have 2 complaints: Audio volume level and room temperature on friday were not within acceptable parameters.
Saturday was ok for me in both regards... only problem was that the "type" of audible noise was incompatible with the required concentration level in light of the approacing deadline.
I love parties where you don't have to leave and can just be away from reality for an entire weekend.

Nice party! Excellent party crowd! Great to meet so many old sceeners again. :)
Negative:
Since so many people left the party place during the nights, and HW was turned off, there was practical no heat source(s) at all. Very chilly for people that tried to work on producing stuff (sitting still) and to the ones trying to get some sleep at the party place.
Listening to lazer and explosion FM generated dreamstation sounds for almost an hour during Digital Illusions Hardcore game presentation was also a bit unbearable at the very high volume it was set to.
The bootblock compo FM noise generated playback was also screaming in my ears, as well as the Uprough pre-compo presentation with all the 80's playbacks was on too loud volume for a long time.
Positive:
Party facility services including a 24h cleaning of WC's, and removing ordinary trash (empty beer cans etc), and bar food+booze was excellent. Also the included "enterance fee" breakfast+dinner was very good, especially the pie.
Great, friendly and helpful service from organizers and the party place crew at all time!

Alright, I think everyone complaining about the volume was sitting in front of the left speaker, which wasn't covered by the screen. We'll make appropriate adjustments next year.
It's quite difficult to get the sound level right, as, apart from being a subjective thing, different frequencies are carried in different ways in different parts of the room. Doing a classic concert sound check, with someone in the middle of the room, doesn't work. At a concert you can just move if it's too loud, but that isn't an option when you have all your gear set up.

Gotta hand it to ye guys who did the main organizing and also to the excellent staff at the place who made it into a really nice party. We finally sorted out the broadcasting as well, but for next year we'll make sure to get proper connectivity with the mixer and such things.
I also just wanna thank for the opportunity to get to help out fixing this party and we at SceneSat will gladly help out more next year if you want us to.
For those of you who missed the broadcast last Saturday, do head over to http://scenesat.com/archive or http://scenesat.com/relive (Java applet replaying tool) and experience the chaos yourselves. :) The show features the music compo entries and the music from the demos + some interviews with people like Bacchus, Blaizer and Mahoney to mention a few. :)
Once again thanx for an awesome weekend, all ye who attended! :)

Great! Thankxs! Fun! 32 nodes!
Regarding sound... It seems today people are not so good at making noise with their monitors. Or is it just me? Didn't parties used to have this constant dissonance of *many* different demos n stuff being played? Did the big soundsystem kill it, or was it a consequence?
Anyway... next Datastorm I'm bringing my gotoblaster!
EDIT: @Frantic: Personally, the volume was a lot worse at last year's LCP (since I was closer to the speaker, I guess). |

i am aware that the volume was unacceptable high sometimes during the friday, and i noticed that the megamix was fucking loud as well when i had time to smoke for the first time, we are sorry for that.. the damping of the right speaker (which we first thought had died when we used the system at mid-level on the clean-up) made the volume much lower for the sound technician than for the people standing close to the left speaker..
but was this really a problem during the compo as well? we (the sound people in the djbooth) could even talk comfortable with eachother and the bar without raising our voices for the whole compo.. |

@Yonx: The volume was a lot better during the compo I think.. You're right about that.
@Goto80: I thought the same about the "missing" soundscape of 99 monitors.. ...and it was a shame that sound was broken on the monitor that I brought to Datastorm. I was definitely planning to pollute the partyplace with the sounds from that monitor! Regarding too loud at LCP... Yeah.. well.. uh uh.. okok. :)

Macx and zzapp69 did their best to try and pollute the audiosphere.. My puny JBL crap speakers gave their best shot at supporting their intentions, but lost against the almighty Alaskan Left.. Next time, I'll Amp Up ;)
Parties should have lots of different noise imo. ...and a bit of silence every once in a while... Silence before the Storm of course ;)

by using both beans and broccoli, the chef obviously knew what the demoscene smell is about! |
