Event id #2454 : Arok Party 2016
Yes, Singular will organize Arok party for the 18th time this year. We hope to see you and your releases there.
There's one important thing to be aware of for now. The date is not August as last year, but 24th-26th of June 2016! So it'll arrive sooner than possibly expected. |

We had to change the date to 29-31th July. So more time to prepare ;) |

How about organizing a disk transfer setup at the party to preserve some rare Hungarian antiques? :-) |

We did something like that last year. Cargo brought a huge box of disks, I think he saved it from binning or something.
There was a time dedicated to show various demos on the big screen, some old, some new. Not everyone was a scener and even I saw some of the really old stuff for the first time.
The main setup ran with an IDE64, therefore I used real 1541 with disks. Cargo gave me the dusty box with 150+ disks, should be plenty to write stuff to.
Just to be sure nothing of value would get lost I tried to back them up first. There's a still unreleased ID64 version which handles this sort of bad disks better (slightly slower).
It got boring rather soon as most of the disk were not 100% readable. Those which were I've uploaded now here in case you're interested (will be deleted soon):

Then I tried to write and verify D64 images onto them. Some didn't work, even after formatting. Was a pain to get enough material written for the demo show.
Unfortunately this was not existing at the time, but this was event was an inspiration to do it:
21st Century Floppy Disk Formatter V0.2
By the way it's a good idea to clean the r/w head often as it may damage an otherwise still usable disk with loose garbage from a previous one...
One year passed and meanwhile I got IDEDOS working on the 1541U-II, so I expect less pain this year. However I still need to source reliable disks for the compos, but not as many. Unless some of you want to give me a hard time with your releases ;) |

Awesome, thanks a lot! Re: dodgy disks with read errors, I hope you kept them anyway - I know the guys from The Transfer Team can do real magic even with heavily error-ridden disks (maybe they want to share some tricks here?), so the challenge will be more how to get the disks to one of them.
And all thumps up for making that effort!
Cheers,

Less than 2 weeks left.
We received two entries already. There were two people concerned about the show time limitation mentioned on the homepage. In short if it's only a bit longer and it's not completely boring we may show the rest even if the time has run out.
Now I'm worried about the allocated time in the compo schedule... But we'll see. |
