Release id #9775 : Sidplay2/w
Although it's been a while, there has been a number of people mentioning how bad Sidplay2/w outputs sounds, particularly filter quality at higher cutoffs. For example, in some old thread, Jammer mentioned that filter output with high cutoff sounds more like "sshhhhhhh" instead of "sssssssss" which is true.
I've been doing some tests though... I use this tool called Xear3D C-Audio configuration (there's others as well as I've been using this one since 2004), which allows you to set panning positions of stereo sound, so basically i set each one to the middle so that is sounds much like it outputs mono audio. Then in Sidplay2/w I set Channel mode to Stereo under Settings menu, so that it will still play .sid music in mono output using the Xear tool. By doing this, the filters now seem to be WAY better like on a real c64.
I wonder if this is something to do with how the data of each oscillator is mixed into the sound buffer , since mixing needs to be done 3 times for 3 voices that can possibly reduce filter quality - where in stereo mode it does less mixing since there a 2 buffers to mix.
Maybe the code can be improved for this tool maybe ? |
