Earliest commercial release with C64 music?
We all know Timbaland used some C64 sounds... but are there any earlier songs known that use Commodore 64 sound (and I don't mean SID station)?
In fact, what would be the earliest commercial release that uses a Commodore 64? |

Kernkraft 400 using Lazy Jones tune, but I'm not sure it's the earliest. |

I checked Discogs.com and found out that well:erdball is releasing records since 1993 or 1994 and afaik they always used a C64.
Anyway, in Bastian's "You've got my love" the C64 is used:

Yes...Jeroen Tel's Rubicon tune indeed.
(Oh btw, a sidstation is capable of playing normal sid's too) |

Ok, I know for a fact that Aphex Twin used C64 sounds in releases as early as 1992. Some were featured on a cover CD of the magazine Future Music. Unfortunately I don't have these, and I have lost contact with my Amiga scene friend that had them. The magazine actually stated in the interview that a C64 was used for some of the sound generation.

I'm not sure this counts as C64 sounds, but U-96's Das Boot clearly uses S.A.M. for the voice.
On Fortran 5's Blues (1991) there is a song called "Bike (Sid Sings Syd)" where S.A.M. sings a part of the song "Bike" from Pink Floyds 1967 Release "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" (written by the late Syd Barret).
There must have been a whole bunch of other songs in the techno/rave scene that used this.

The intro is from Rubicon, but let's not put Bastian in the same line as Timbaland... things were solved back then and JT and Bastian get along fine.
This Bastian guy uses the sidstation a lot, plus he's originally an ex-amigascener and general demoscene lover. Besides that, he's one of the best producers in Holland. |

i'm pretty sure it is NOT s.a.m. - alex christensen was an amiga user (like most early techno producers) =) |

It's from my recollection of the tune, so I guess I could remember wrong.
I got to dig it out and have a listen. I'm positive about Fortran 5 though.
Amiga samples was used much earlier than people seemed to have started using c64 samples, for example 16-bit sampled extensively from Amiga games and used Amiga references in their song texts.

now where's that from?
christensen was an atari-guy, at least he flashed his atari to the camera during an interview, no sign of an amiga at all. and the speech he used in das boot isn't exactly the native wb-speech either. =) |

Yepp, easy. Well, no group have used the sid as good as Machinae Supremacy, that's for sure. I just love the Jets 'N Guns OST. Lovely SID sounds and guitars, can it get better? |
