Your favourite tune? (from UNPOPULAR composers ONLY)
In the infamous "Your favourite tune?" topic, everyone most of the time state their favourite tunes from composers that have either made history (like Rob Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, Martin Galway etc) or extremely good composers of today's scene (like DRAX, Jeff, Linus etc).
However, what is your favourite tune from UNPOPULAR musicians? i.e. sceners who were not known well during any timeline of the c64 scene, no matter how skilled they were. You know the ones I am talking about... simply have a look at how big the MUSICIANS directory is in the HVSC collection. There must have been times when you took a peek at a sid directory belonging to someone you have never heard of, yet you thought "Hey, that's a great tune! Shame this musician was never known too well in the scene at the time."
I think this would help give credit to those who never got fame with their contributions to the scene. |

I already like this topic.
anyway, speaking of Eclipse, try "Melancorie"!!
I really dig that tune.
also, "Wooloop" and "Horsing Around" by Mindflow.
and finally "Midday Reactance" by Sidder.
I'm looking forward to discover a heap of new sids and musicians I never really paid attention to. |

Trinity by Tim Kleinert, but I'm not sure if he qualifies for the Unpopular-category.
I like the cheekiness of the tune, and the samples are just perfect. |

From my directory where I've put favorites for many years:
Moppe - Comec, this has been my ringtone for years. It sounds kinda weird and noisy in the last HVSC version..
Jammer - Eager to play, just a tune thats hits you right from the start.
Shogoon - Fun Factory
Havoc - Funk in town, hypnotic...
Tim Kleinert - Graphixmania_2_part_6, digitune with a very full sound that is rare in sidtunes.
Magnar Harestad/Lizard - McGottifant, a tune I've found myself humming on several occasions. located under Musicians/Megastyle.
Wally Beben - Winter Olympiad 88 preview, I cant understand why this only made it to be a preview. Its just intense!
ED - Cliffard, something completely different!
and a lot of SMC, PRI and Scortia's tunes!
My own tunes I find rather mediocre unfortunately :-\ |

I admit I took some "not that unknown" like PRI, SMC, Scortia, Hagar and Tim Kleinert. But Jammer and Shogoon I knew very little about.
If I define this very strict it would only leave Havoc and Ed I guess. |

Great stuff. Also, his latest remixes are killer, too! Check it if you like:
Doctorrus Petrixuss
I like his stuff quite much.
Considering my fav non-pop SID tune... I am a latecomer, only started checking the time between 1994 and 2009 last year so I don't know if he counts as 'unpopular' but as far as I've discovered Kjell Nordbo was quite underrated in his time. Although there is a big number of SIDs that I like from him, I HAVE TO listen to this one every time:
All the Time
Also, +1 goes for TASK III by Frank Endler. Sounds to be a work of really skilled hands. I'm quite surprised that I could not find anything else from him. |

Or Zabutom. Or Mindflow. Or Bappalander. Or Ed. If you've done music for several high-profile demos, have placed high in various music compos and/or are a generally recognized and beloved musician within the scene you can't rightfully be called "unpopular" IMO. |

Exactly. Besides that, shouldn't "unpopular" rather be "unknown" or something like that? |

A couple of years ago I tried to track down Tonal Teapot without much success. My notes say "Tonal Teapot, Sandro and Gwnyfor from the UK". Can´t remember where I got that info from, but yeah ... could be two people indeed. |

I agree with Daison. It was not my intention to call Ole Marius Pettersen unpopular. I understand his work was widely used, and I often listen to his music myself. My mistake was to just look at the number of tunes released. Wish he made more of them.
In advance, I therefore apologize to anyone it might concern when I recommend Fulcrum, another favourite of mine. Definitely not un-cool and a pity there are so few (on csdb at least) demos using his music.

plus a few great tracks from not that unpopular, but a bit forgotten/underrated composers:

Rush Hours 1 by Sage
Magic Carpet Ride by Dr. Voice
Yearshade by Shapie

I think you've hit the nail exactly on the head. 'UNPOPULAR' is not the right term for this category, it has negative aspects.
'UNDERRATED' is correct. Considering either base question and reflections, people react to that term.
Anyway... What spectacular SID fireworks you guys have listed :O Great listening suggestions!
It's amazing how many great minds have been composing SIDs. Popularity has nothing to do with quality. |

To me "unpopular" has two meanings: 1) not well-known, 2) someone or something being dislikable... So maybe one could say: "from less known composers only"

Scroll Machine by Yip has always been in my top 3 of best SID choons. The later incarnations of this song were rather bad tho imo.
Yeah I guess I do prefer slow paced tunes over the fast bassline and lots of drums stuff. Am also a big fan of Matt Galway.
Yip came over to our place while visiting the Netherlands and was absolutely amazed with the fact that sometimes we put chocolate flakes on our bread at breakfast. We had some good laughs. He's a really nice lad.

I want to point out two musicians who arent really unfamous but forgotten:
Mixer/Origo Dreamline
my favourite ones are Red Eyes, Hellraiser and the incredible The Dawn, all of them have a (let me call it) hard impact with a push for extraoridinary demo parts from Origo and Beyond Force,e.g. The Dawn used in TNT's Star Rats part in Partytrap/BF is just greatly fitting and both with TNT's design doing a great atmosphere. I also like the slower Ikari and Talent Tune which I think got never used by them.
And then my absolute favourite
I can listen to his tracks for hours without being bored, he is never mentioned in any most liked lists and his compositions beat out the mysticism style of certain Galway tunes. Not to forget when he does an avantgardistic track of up to ten minutes, I cant think of any other to get close.
He's been thou in one of the best demo groups ever and his name is Rage of Megastyle Inc.
Go into his HVSC dir and start with the first track (Aaaargh_part_2) but keep listening, you'll be deeply excited. His tracks sound like a mixture of Galway, 1983 tunes and Best-of-Voicetracker. And already the second (Aaargh_part_4) is one of my mega favourites, the melody and rhythm are so damn catchy. When I'm asked for my fav music (outside the scene) I often mention him too, ofcourse everyone say "What?", but this tune is a big reason to do so.
Or take Abba.sid starting with a very average bass/rhythm and transformating into a fantastic song when the melody starts, although bass&rhythm remains the same all over the song. Then for a trip on it's own it must be Doom3.sid or Harlot6.sid just listen and throw away your lame Pink Floyd vinyls. Then his master work, the sound track to Kalle Kloak, a demo perfectly set together by Scroll, Sparkler and Rage. Kalle_Kloak_part_8.sid wheeling your brain into outer dimensions beyond the future of computerism (no, I'm not stoned or drunk). Then one of the saddest and gripping tunes ever done on the machine. The Mariners_Tale.sid, just listen and you will know why not everything is negative. Also listen to all his other tracks, none of it may be forgotten.
thanks to this guy for many hours of pure sid enjoyment in my crazy life.
