When you want to stick with your PC, then try Cadver's brilliant GoatTracker at http://covertbitops.c64.org/ . It has a user-friendly GUI and feels like the well-known Amiga Trackers. |

For starters, I would recommend either...
Goat Tracker - however, I have to stress that the current release 1.52 isn't as much userfriendly as the previous versions, due to being much more flexible and powerful (which complicated user interface a little) - or...
Odin Tracker, which is a native C64 application (to be used under an emu - preferably latest VICE with reSID emulation turned on), VERY EASY, very friendly, some people still use it despite terribly high rastertime and memory usage. http://www.inf.bme.hu/~zed/tracker/ is the homepage. |

Ok, I am not a composer but many people also suggest http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=2631&show=review. |

True, John Player is to be recommended. It's simple enough to be utilized by a newcomer, but it's also possible to achieve amazing effects (tunes by Aleksi himself, Reed, Mr Death). Also, the player isn't on the hungry side when it comes to eating rasterlines. |
