Musicianship, not Zen or Sophistry

Being a reborn newbie to the 64, i'd like to know who the new musicians (composers) are in the scene today.

I've downloaded EVERY possible sid from HVSc, and well, i'm still looking at composers I knew in the day. Like Image, Tempest, Sequencer and the like.

Most of the sid's I have are from the 80's and 90's. Very few do I find that are from 2000. Then again, i've only 31,440 sids and haven't even scratched the surface. I guess I just don't know WHO I should look at since i've been out of the scene for some time.

Right now, i'm listening to TAXIM and his (or her) sid's don't sound bad, and was composed in 2003.

I guess i'd just like something newer in my work(s). Any and all help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

The Phantom/Eric

Check out Fanta/Oxyron, Goto80/HT, Linus/Triad, Maktone/Fairlight, Ed/Wrath Designs, Intensity/Dekadance, Jeff/Camelot and Hein/Onslaught for some fresh sounds... Or just browse through the latest releases to see which groups are active, and listen to their musicians.

Or just use a sidfind tool (Sidbace for offline search, http://www.c64.org/sidfind/ online) and put any given year into the search field.

Wow..

I'm really liking HEIN's music style.. Seems so many musicians stay within a certain instrument style, this guy's all over the place.. I totally love his ROCK IT (rock_sid) sid.. Or even his STAYIN' ALIVE.. Incredible... Talk about talented use of many instruments. Outstanding..

I've checked out a few of the others mentioned above and I like them too, but HEIN's just take me WAYYYYYY back.. As i'm typing this, i'm jammin' to ROCK IT.. hahaha..

I also checked out the URL and sorry to say, it's too slow for my tastes.. Not the website, it finds things fast, but scrolling up or down the screen takes forever to update.. could be my crappy 32meg non-3d crap video card, actually, i'm thinking that's what it is anyway.. I should have never given my nephew my 128 meg radeon (even though the radeon is crappy, it at least could handle 3d).

Enough of my problems.. Anybody else have any info on other composers other than the 8-9 listed above? I'd kinda like to find just 1 guy (or gal) and stick with them for a little while..

Try search for "adsr". A group of two very skilled musicians in the early 90's.

There was a guy called mitch&dane (or possibly they were two ;) with tons of extraordinary music.. search for "manifesto" and you'll get some.

Did anyone mention JCH yet!?? Oh, you were looking for *new* music :), anyhow JCH still roxx.

And check out the demo "Cycle/BoozeDesign" and load the file "sixpack". Enjoy!! [end of commercial break :]

My head just bumped.

As HCL said, go to c64.sk, download SidCompo5 and check those composers. That should keep you busy for a while :) <personal taste /> Add Jeff, Glenn Rune Gallfoss, Agemixer, Aleksi Eeben...

@ The Phantom: true, Hein is one big megatalented homeboy ;) If you like his music, don't forget to check Linus (a bit similar, sophisticated composing style), Jammer & Abaddon (those freaks are all over the place too, and fucking stylish; you may remember Abaddon from the old days, but believe me, his best works are the newest). Reed's also worth checking (sidfunk at its best; he's sorta famous on MOD/XM scene, too).

Randall is the most talented of all them homeboys.. :) A pitty he's a social being, thus not composing a tune a day.. Or is he and Jammer the same guy?? ;)

Has anyone mentioned Aleksi Eeben yet?

So what's the conclusion now? Were Mitch&Dane two guys existing of Mitch and Dane, or have you been kidding like always TDJ? :)

Hey Dane... "Christian country scene", does that mean that Mitch is a believing christian? And what about you?

I also like a lot some Imaic's tunes, I think he managed to implement was peculiar and nice sounds, especially the drums, which not everybody succed in. Check: C64Music/VARIOUS/G-L/Imaic/Children.sid and C64Music/VARIOUS/G-L/Imaic/Eyes.sid

Might I recommend DRAX and A-man as well? One of them just never stopped, the other recently returned. Good stuff in there. My personal experience tells me that I should also direct you to Ed, Djinn, Goto80, Wizard, Shogoon, AMJ, GRG, Dalezy, Fanta, Daf, Praiser, Wacek, Klax, Noise (I probably forgot some, don't shoot). Without them, you wouldn't have heard all the angles of the .sid experience.

Someone with his very own distinct style and the best screaming guitar in town also lurks in /VARIOUS/S-Z/Vip/. Check him out! ;-)
