Strange SID
Hello!
The 6581 SID in my SX64 is not feeling very well. I know that the filter can become kinda "overloaded" if filtering several channels at once, but on this specific 6581 it really sounds totally fucked (as compared to another 6581-machine I have) even after filtering only two channels at once, and we shouldn't really mention how it sounds when filtering all three.... . Now I wonder:
Might it simply be the case that this is the way the SX64 machines are constructed, and nothing is broken?
...or, on the other hand, does this imply that something *fixable* is broken? Something like a resistor or something like that (I know nothing about electronics)...

well if they hadn't fucked up the filter cutoff frequencies, then the 8580 might have been an ok chip :-)

now that you guys ruled out yourself with just another funky my-chip-is-bigger-than-yours discussion, i'd like to say that one of my machines does prolly have the most fucked up 6581 ever. it distorts like hell - which might be a good feature for jeff - and it can't handle more than one filtered voice at once without sounding like an overheated adlib-card. i have to add that this is a 6581 in a c64c/II, basically not a usual thing at all.
so, frasse, is there any chance that this is the original chip in your machine? i don't know anything about c64 electronics either (you should see me frown and panicking out whenever i open any of my machines), but probably, different hardware causing a clash could be it.
but seriously, this thread needs a hardware guy.

Well to get back on topic.. I did notice that none of my SX boards sounded the way I would like 6581 to sound and after reading Frantics post here, thinking a bit about it, I came to the conclusion that all of them actually sounded pretty similar.. which in the case of 6581 calls for natural suspicion ;-)
Anyways, I took a glance at the schematics and noticed that the SX has both the caps connected between CAP1A-CAP1B and CAP2A-CAP2B set to 2200pF, while on the C64 both are set to only 470pF.
Now I haven't checked if what's mounted on the PCBs actually conforms to the schematics, but if so could that explain Frantics problem?
