The "Name this SID" thread

This is a thread where people can ask for the name and composer of SID tunes from demos, if they don't know what they're called. Useful if people want to download the SID or update the database entry with music credits. It's helpful even if you only know the names of one or a few SIDs, and providing a link to the downloadable SID would be nice too.

I'm looking for all SID tunes used in this demo, anyone knows what they are called?

Name of the sid used in the ESI intro at around 6:40 in this intro collection? It's not listed on that intro's entry here at CSDb.

Thank you Petey! Back when we were in the old scene, R1D1 was just another popular SID to us. In this modern day, it is a song that could go into a zombie movie. Recently, people have been plagiarizing 64 SIDs, and incorporating them into their cheap pop, r&b and rap songs. Such a disgrace to the original composers and to sceners. No doubt why the music pirates would because if a person listens to a few SIDs, with no knowledge of their origin, they will realize they have discovered a treasure of intricate compositions. This treasure belongs to us, the sceners who were in the old scene and everyone who participates to this day in the very rich Commodore 64 Scene.

I like this thread. Edwin van Santen created some wonderful tunes. Much of what he composed I remember from various intros and demos from the old scene. He passed away in 2006, leaving the scene with some great music.

The main menu's tune is identified, however there are five additional tunes in the Meganoter 2.0+, one of them is certainly by 20CC just don't remember which...

Btw, this is my first post on the forum - great thread on a great site - thanks for the memories :)

Poor : the disk is bad, some prgs have bad sectors so no wonder they don't work, will look at it later.
Brainstorm 3: sids added and commented
In Memoriam : sids added and commented. also changed release date (dec 1989, not 1990)

Meganoter V2.0+:

/MUSICIANS/M/MozIcArt/Tjelta_Geir/Melodious.sid
/MUSICIANS/S/Slaygon/Overture_90.sid
/MUSICIANS/D/DRAX/End.sid

but obviously I won't add these sids in the megatoolz entry. If there's an entry for the single tool, feel free to add the sids to it.

Wow!! Thanks a million - definitely an excellent knowledge of SIDs! :)

As for the Poor demo, I have some of the parts in separate T64 files but I guess it wouldn't help much.
However, I'm not sure if Brainstorm 3's intro would be Zamzara (or I can't find the tune in question in the SID).
Thanks again!

It IS Zamzara tune #1, but the music in the intro starts about 1:58 into the tune.

It's not just knowledge of sid files, it's impossible to know every 36000 sids =)
Just dump the memory, find the music data and search for hexpatterns in hvsc dir.
The missing parts as t64 would be nice to try to rebuild the d64 replacing the broken ones.

Great Zyron =) Sids identified and added to the entry.
Part B.* doesn't decrunch if loaded from the previous part because the decruncher expects $2d/$2e set correctly before decrunching, but they're not set after loading.
Patching the file to set them before decrunching is trivial, I can provide a "101%" fixed d64. ;)

Thanks!! Well, the Poor/Biascrusher question seems to be solved then... :)

- On another note, to me it seems that the Mozicart tune 'Luminous' has two versions. The one used in demos differ from the version currently in HVSC, but only very slightly: listening _by ear_ (on SidAmp), one note in the arpeggio lead is played a bit higher at 0:20. (Don't know if it's really two different versions or a question of player software setting.)

- A bonus question: I've had a melody on mind that I heard on the C64 around 1990 but don't remember whether it was a demo, cracktro or a game. I have tried to recreate it in BuzzTracker (I'm from the PC basically :)) as I'm not familiar with SID trackers (yet?). The arps, bass and percussion were added by me, I only remember the (lead) melody. Can someone help in identifying it?

we use black magic to find sids.
we can find anything.
first of all, we have over 5000 tunes in the head.
second, we use black magic.

:d

remembering 5000+ tunes isnt harder than to remember all assembly opcodes. if you see/hear the stuff every day, your brain is used to getting refreshed (like ram in a computer), and at some point, the memories are burned so tight, that you cant forget them anymore. :D

Yeah, Ian Coog throws the d64 at his dos script which extracts the prgs, unpacks the files, autorips the sid tunes, takes a usable pattern from the music data and autocompares it on all tunes in HVSC. Or something along these lines. Black magic is so cool! :-)

This might be slightly offtopic as this tune to ID is from a game... it was a 'Western' style arcade game from the early 1980s. I don't remember the title - only the melody stuck in my head which I tried to recreate in BuzzTracker from memory (it had this syncopated rhythm). MP3 sample >>
