Come oooonnnn!!!
SDI is BY FAR _not_ the easiest to begin with!

In the past used USA's Music Assembler a lot, but Scout pointed me to John Player V1.6 & V2.0 if I'd ever wanted to pick up composing again.
It's a very simple editor and unlike SDI you are not distracted by all the 'background' stuff that is available.

GoatTracker, btw, is also a nice (PC platform) editor.
Still easier to use than SDI ;-)

I'd say Goat Tracker is easier than John Player. SDI requires some more in-depth understanding of the SID, as well as learning a lot of keyboard shortcuts.

As a free bonus Goat Tracker tunes have pretty low rastertime usage. :-) It's kinda hard to make good instruments with it though - compared to the likes of SDI and X-SID - but there are some people who succeed, like Linus/VRZ for example.

Yes, SDI is not super-easy to start with, but it's good once you've learned it. However, as a first editor to start with I very highly recommend Cybertracker. It is ultra-easy to use. If you have ever used Fast Tracker 2 on PC, then you'll be making SID music with Cybertracker in no time. Sounds are made with graphical envelopes and there are many ready-made instruments you can load. Anybody can learn it easily in a short time!

However, CT is not the perfect tracker in long-term use. It has many limitations. Its biggest problem is the fact that it doesn't have very much note memory. Also it doesn't have different options for note restarting, there's no multispeed, but you don't need that stuff for your first SIDs.

So my recommandation is to make a few tunes in CT, so that you'll learn how to make sounds and arrange a good SID tune, and then if and when you clearly notice the limitations, try some other, more complicated tracker.

Too bad no there has been no new version of CT for a long time, but it's great that it even exists in the first place. Cuz it's good for beginners ;)

Goattracker easier than JohnPlayer? Are you kidding? =) Doesn't JohnPlayer completely abandon flexible filter-, pulse- and speedtables? Seriously, JohnPlayer has to be _the_ easiest tracker out there. The results can still be mindblowingly good if you check Aleksi's or some of Reed's tunes.

Regarding instrument programming in goat - I still fail to see any reason why it would be harder to achieve decent results in goat compared to other sophisticated editors like SDI, X-SID or JCH. I am not the only one using it exclusively - Hein, Randall, Jammer, Conrad, A-Man ... you name it :)

As with all things in life, it's not the size that matters, but what you do with it.
