Sid 8580 technical specificication
Sid 8580 technical specificications:
3 voices
9 octave range
4 waveforms (Triangle, Sawtooth, Pulse and Noice)
programmable ADSR generator (Attack, Delay, Sustain and Release)
programmable filter selectable for each voice

Is there something I have forgot?

too low volume on regular d418 samples, unless you mod your c64... ;-) |

8580.. didn't pay attention first... if it is 8580 (rather than 6581) then you have the "additional waveforms" too of coz.. |

afaik, most of the combined waveforms work on the old chip aswell, some of them just have lower volume... anyways, they are not the most important ones :-) |

@Jeff: Hmm... Maybe? ...but at least some of the waveforms are really almost silent on some chips... ...but I realize that I don't know exactly which ones and exactly for what revisions this holds. I've mostly relied on this taken for granted truth up to now, that "6581 does not have combined waveforms".
Details, anyone? |

well, I am NOT trying to favourize 6581 over 8580, even though I've mostly used 6581 chips.
31,51,61 works quite ok on my 6581r4
71 is VERY silent (probably too silent to be usable)
and 31 is somewhat silent.
Also the "all waves combined" trick, used for hihats, after a few frames of noise wave, to give it a bit metallic sound, works perfectly on 6581.
I think I myself have only used 51 and F1 sofar... I haven't found use for the other ones.
Another thing... 8580 is good for switching filtertypes without clicking. 6581 is not THAT flexible concerning that, but still one can avoid most of the clicking by being a bit carefull with it :-)
6581 filter is characterized as "warm"
8580 filter is characterized as "plastic"
(just some terms used for describing how it sounds)
8580 has more powerfull resonance which also tends to increase the "volume" on filtered sounds.
6581 filter can do "saturation", which would probably also be described as a mild for of distortion.
That was a few more of the things I know about sid chips :-)

Tonhuvudet, what's your point? |

@Mace: It seems to me that he isn't trying to make a point, but to ask a question? (Maybe for writing something on his homepage or in an essay or whatever.. who cares? :) |

What I meant is: what's the point of asking?
(And then, not responding to all our reactions...) |

Yeah, but Commodore left the details about ring mod and sync out of the C64C user manual... |
