It's irrelevant if i personally like or dislike his music (some of it, i do like. But most of it is just la la). Also, i won't deny he was influental or that his soundmonitor was a milestone.
Not because it was such a great editor, but rather because it was widely accessible. And really, what other options were there.
But still, he's overrated. Rob Hubbard - Martin Galway .. and Chris Hülsbeck ? Yeah, like that's gonna happen.
And dont even get me started on scooter. |

Hülsbeck didn't really shine until the Amiga, but he did some awesome stuff on the C64 as well. Definitely worth mentioning in the same sentence as Galway and Hubbard (I consider Galway to be the overrated one among them - taste differs). |

The kings are: Tel, Hubbard, Galway. The princes are: Follin, Laxity and Johannes Bjerregaard. After that comes Fred Gray, Reyn Ouwehand and Charles Deenen. |

Obviously people have different tastes, but other things come into play as well when we try to rate different composers. For instance, if consistency was a main criterion for my rating, Jeroen would probably beat Fred Gray on my list, but if I were to choose only one tune from each composer, Fred would come out on top (Mutants). More interesting for me would be people reviewing their favorite sids, because that could give me an insight into what people like about Follin and whoever I might have missed out on. HVSC is after all getting quite big these days. But that's for another thread I guess. |

And all this conversation just because I wanted a manual for Laxity Editor. :D
Well, I'm not a coder so writing an own editor is not an option. Learning Laxity Editor via a song by Laxity is a time consuming option and so it seems like using other editor is the right option atm. I've been testing some editors now but I've not yet found the best fit for me.
And why all this? Well, I haven't used any C64 editor since Voicetracker something like 15 years ago and now I'm again interested in "composing" music with C64. So, I'm doing a little research and try to find a good editor for me.
As for composers... I think Jeroen Tel, Geir Tjelta, Johannes Bjerregaard and Laxity are the kings of melody but Follin and JCH has very nice sounds. But I can't list my fav musicians because there are so many of them. |
