More music genre compos??

Highscore Power Ballad music compo turned out to be a success and activated the music-scene a lot! This compo which was born thanks to oneliners obviously needs a sequel.. Or does it?

What do you people think? Was this just an idea that carried for this one time or should there be more of this kind?

If there's going to be another one, what theme would activate people the most? I want your ideas.

Here's mine:

The theme should be wide enough so that there won't be 30 "poker faces" etc.. :) How about James Bond theme? Everyone knows that typical Bond-type of music and chord progressions that make it typical but still there are 23(?) great, different Bond tunes out there.. In other words, no covers. Totally new tunes in a James Bond spirit.
50 years of Bond so far and this idea would even end up with a contribution-disk (music selector) for the sake of it.

Now it's your turn.. Whenever there are some great ideas, then let's pick up one, even vote for the theme or so..

Now let's talk...

Online compos are nice, but i'm way to undisciplined to
compose anything specific like a theme or a certain genre on purpose.

It's a great idea! Whether it's genre or theme is just semantics, right? James Bond themes could be seen as a genre, for example. Anyway, some suggestions:

Blues
Samba
Bossanova
Ambient
Death Metal

Arranging to a style is fun.

I'm on for a Bond theme challenge. Epicness, suspense, strong melody(yes to Golden Eye, no to that Madonna crap), big or intimate with 3 sid voices only.

Afterall, Bond title sequences have been an inspiration to many demos over the years.

I agree that Goldeneye is one of the very best Bond themes and that Die another Day wasn't good at all as a Bond theme. It was more a case of Madonna adding some (great) strings to a finished song, using it as a vehicle to promote her album while ticking the box of I-did-a-Bond-theme.

Shirley Bassey defined the Bond theme music in my opinion. It should always have a female vocalist with a rich, haunted voice. So they really nailed it with picking Adele this time, the only problem was that her song didn't have a chorus strong enough.

In the future I see Lana Del Rey doing a Bond theme.

Since 2010, we've been cooking something for the (hopefully near, let's say Q2-Q3 2013) future that is very closely related here. It covers thematic / criterium based competition, it just still needs a lot of background work/planning.

BTW congrats for all the high score ballad competitors and organisers. I could not participate due to heavy everyday duties (let alone finding a couple of silent hours to give tunes the attention that they deserve) but I had an eye on the event that gives me high hopes about the future of SIDs and C64 music compos. Kudos!

How about crack intro music compo:
- max. playtime 1:00 min, then repeat or fade.
- max. size: $1000-$2000
- single speed only
- no SID model preference (should sound good on all SID models)

A theme I'd like to see is a 2-CHANNEL COMPO, aiming at ingame scores! In most games at least one channel is left out for sound effects, but still rocks. R-type is the example that comes to my mind first. Guess you've got hundreds of good examples (and that might be an interesting thread, but still another story)

This theme is interesting because:

- It's a very clear rule
- The composers that already master this technique (in favor for reverb, dual voice leads etc) will gain more fame for it
- It will inspire those of us fiddeling with gamedevs! And the tunes might come in handy for compos like the RGCD one. I believe good ingame music is kind of sought after, but I may be wrong.
- 3 channels is WAY to unrestricted for any hardcore musician :P

(a 1-channel compo is a bit like overdoing it ..or isn't it?)

Opinions?

I guess no one likes a 2 or 3SID compo?! :P
Roland Hermans could easily code a player for that in asm for use in VICE.
He might want to share that too!
